Realtek Audio sound problems with an external speaker

    Hi, all.

With the purchase of a new Dell laptop running Windows 10, I've joined the legions of Win 10 users having trouble with Realtek Audio. I've made some progress these last few weeks, but am not out of the woods yet.

(For the record, I've updated to the most recent Realtek driver for my system, as determined by Dell SupportAssist).

The laptop recognizes an external speaker only if the external speaker is plugged into the laptop's audio jack and turned on before powering up the laptop. If I allow Windows to boot fully before connecting the external speaker, sound comes out of the laptop speakers, but not out of the external speaker. Windows, fully booted, doesn't recognize an external speaker plugged in "on the fly."

I've tried other Realtek drivers, but the one mentioned above is the only one that halfway works. (With other drivers, I can't get sound out of the external speaker under any circumstances.)

Am new to Windows 10, and maybe I've overlooked an important setting. Or maybe I'm unlucky! Either way, Win 10 has given me more trouble in the first month than I had in six years of Windows 7. Just sharing!

Would appreciate your input, and thanks.

    Brooks

More of a Hardware vs Driver issue. I have not had any issues on the desktop running Windows 10 that is in my office. My speakers are built into my monitor and uses a separate cord from the DVI. I would just remember to have the speakers plugged in and on or use a USB device for external sound.
