Have managed to get speaker to work by doing a 'reset pc' in windows 10 and reinstalling all programs.

Thank you for all help given.

Glad to hear you succeeded- but it's a bit drastic.

Another possible approach to such things- don't know if you used it -
an in-place upgrade repair install - which keeps all progs, data, most settings.
    Tutorial available.

It could help you not to have to reinstall all progs etc should something happen you can't readily correct if you use disk imaging routinely- that means you can restore an image of Windows - or any imaged partition- and have it exactly as it was when the image was created. E,g, Macrium Reflect (free) - so often recommended here.

Downside- image has to have been created before problem, and EVERYTHING on the partition is set back to the date of the image.

Then there's System Restore- if restoring completes successfully.

I have today turned on HP Laptop and found I have same issue.

I have tried HP diagnostics which is done via bios and speaker is working so issue mus be with windows 10.

Any Ideas how to resolve issue?

    These are some troubleshooting steps:

    1) Run the Windows playing audio troubleshooter
    2) Some HP models use audio CODECS.
Open the HP website (support and drivers) > check Windows 10, 8, 7 to see whether the model had used CODECS.
HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HPĀ® Customer Support
If the model uses them, make sure that they are installed in addition to the audio drivers.
    3) Open device manager > check status of audio inputs and outputs as well as sound video and game controllers > yellow triangles or unknown device?
    4) reinstall audio drivers
    5) use clean boot

    6) perform an in place upgrade repair

On Thursday everything was OK. I turned on HP laptop today and found speaker icon on taskbar had a x on it indicating it did not work. I then did a hardware test from bios which is done outside Windows 10 and found speaker worked and I could hear sound so issue is with Windows 10.
I have reinstalled audio driver with no luck in solving issue. I do not want to do a clean boot or in place upgrade repair due to this being the second time I have had this problem and want to find out why it has happened.?

Do you routinely use disk imaging (so often recommended here) and keep a log of changes made?
This can help in resolving some problems, and give a way back to a previous good state without technical help.

What happens if you create a new user for test purposes?
Do you see the same problem?

If I create new user there is no difference.

Please note it was a week ago that issue had been resolved and now I have got same issue.

    Any advice how to solve?

    Thank you for all help.

I used Tweaking.com's tool with no luck so did an in place upgrade repair and all is OK.

What free software do you recommend for doing disk image?

Some options include: Acronis, Aoemi, EaseUS, Macrium, Paragon, etc.

There are free and pay versions depending on the features desired.

There is a Ten Forums link devoted to this topic:

Macrium is widely used in Ten Forums:
