Keep audio devices from re-enabling following Windows Update

As my thread title indicates, I was wondering if there is a way to prevent Windows Update from re-enabling sound devices I have manually disabled.

One of my monitors has built-in speakers, and every time I run WIndows Update it enables them as a sound device, sets them as default, and sets them as primary. I don't have many system sounds, so I typically don't notice until I've got something that uses the sound up and running.

It's easy enough to disable them again, but I have a few programs that don't respond well to having the audio device changed while active, and it's frustrating that I have to do this every time.

If an HDMI cable is attached Windows automatically sets HDMI as the default audio playback device.
If you don't want HDMI, disable the HDMI audio in the Device Manager. There are several possibilities for the HDMI audio device depending on your hardware. Could be Intel HD Audio, NVIDIA HD Audio, AMD Radeon HD Audio. Could also be generic High Definition Audio for HDMI. Which one(s) it is disable them in the Device Manager.
