    Sound Driver headache

    Hi all,

    Running Windowd 10 version 1803 on my Samsung Series 3 laptop. Believe I’ve got the latest version of Windows 10 (in the UK) through usual Windows Updates.

    Anyway, was watching a movie earlier when I realised I couldn’t raise the laptop volume level above 37 through any method possible. I could move the slider but it would just keep going back to 37. I could decrease it though. I later found out this was happening only when I had headphones plugged in.

    So I thought I’d uninstall the Realtek HD audio driver, which I did. Then try to install the latest version. I downloaded the latest CAB file (through the Realtek sticky thread) and extracted the files into a folder. But I can’t manually update the driver through Device Manager; keeps coming up with ‘your computer had the latest driver installed’.

    What do I do now? Left with no sound at the minute!

    OK, so I have R2.82 driver installed at the moment.
    Without headphones plugged in I can raise the volume as normal through the slider.
    With headphones plugged in, I can now move the slider but the actual volume doesn’t increase past 37.

    It’s almost as if my laptop has set 37 to be a limit when headphones are plugged in.

    Could really do with some help here please.

    I have the same issue. I believe it is a silly protection to prevent an ear injury. I just increase the volume on headphones. You can check your settings or audio players for "Normalize" option, it keeps the volume on the same level, but it can be setup to boost it as well, if supported, it should fool Windows, like 37=337.

    Just to update this thread;

    I updated drivers to the Realtek UAD one. Installed fine and now I can raise the volume above 37. A hearing warning comes up but clicking ‘allow’ makes it work.

    So it was a safety feature, no idea why the warning box wasn’t showing up before.
