Windows 10 No Longer Detects Headphones after a Sound Update?

Hello, guys! I finally decided to contribute to this community with the above mentioned question since I basically tested much of what's published elsewhere and really nothing worked.

Windows does not detect my headphones no matter what I do. A short list as follows:

    - Updated drivers - no effect

    - Updated drivers based on the list that Windows shows after scanning - no effect

    - Rolled back to older version - no effect

    - Set my headphones as default device in the Playback tab - no effect

    - Disabled enhancements in the advanced settings - no effect

    - Changed the settings to 24 bits, 190200 hz - no effect

    - Selected the output device in the sound tab as Headphones - no effect

I don't know what else I am supposed to do. Everything worked fine, however prior to these fruitless try outs, I had the stupidity to troubleshoot the sound and from that point on it went downhill.

Please, I need your help to fix this as it appears that Windows does not detect my headphones at all now. As if the jack itself is no longer active since whenever I plug them in, no recognition is registered whatsoever.

I don't know if this has to do anything with input jack separation and if it does, how do I do that?

PS: I don't have Realtek sound manager. If I install their drivers, I lose completely my sound. The big irony is that in my case ASUS recommend Realtek for my motherboard (ASUS PRIME H270-PRO)... All advice is very welcome and appreciated!

One other thing you may want to try is go to settings > Privacy > Microphone and make sure it is set to ON. You can select which Apps can and cannot use it.

Also, make sure you do not have it blocked in your AV.

Thanks for your quick reply. As it appears in my Privacy Settings, the microphone is on, so that's in order. However, I don't know what you mean about checking if my AV is blocked. What is that and where do I check it?

Whatever you use for an Anti Virus. Some have a function to block a camera and/or microphone.

I use Windows Defender and nothing appears to be blocked. The thing is, I don't understand why the jack input on my front panel of my desktop (where I usually plug in my headphones) is, as if, turned off / blocked for Windows does not recognize the device at all. Again, this all happened after that sound troubleshooting.

Can you plug it into the rear of the computer and does it work?

Make sure your connection to the front panel audio is securely plugged in to the correct place

Make sure you have not disabled the sound in your bios.

In the sound configuration, go to the recording tab. Make sure your headphones are set as default device. Also, if they are shown there as active, Windows is detecting it. Otherwise it would show as a disabled or no connected device.
Right click the headset microphone, make sure it does not show as disabled. Then select properties. You can go through each tab and make sure it is set right.

You can also right click the speaker icon on the taskbar and find a few other settings there.

I just tried to list the things I can think of for you to try. I think most importantly is does it work plugged into the rear of the computer. Also try them in another computer to make sure the headphones are OK, and try a different set of headphones on your computer. Those things can give you some indication of what is wrong.

You can also go to Device manager, expand Sound. video and game controllers and make sure there are no yellow triangles. You can right click each one and select properties and see if they show as working.

What headphones are you using? Are they a 3.5mm plug or USB?

Let me answer your questions as follows:

    1. The front panel is securely plugged and in the correct place.

    2. The sound is not disabled in the BIOS since I never mess with the settings in there. This sudden problem appeared after the sound troubleshooting of Windows, following a restart and then the sound was completely gone.

    3. See the image below.

    4. Headset microphone is not disabled.

    5. The properties of the headset appear to be normal with no restrictions.

    6. The headphones work perfectly fine in the rear panel.

    7. I tested the headphones on another computer and they work just fine.

    8. No warning signs in the device manager.

    9. My headphone are 3.5 mm.

In conclusion, as I suspect, the front panel jack input has been somehow blocked / disabled after that Windows troubleshooting. Mind you, I don't have Realtek drivers installed now. If I have, I lose completely my sound (from the speakers, which are plugged in the rear panel).

PS: My system runs in Bulgarian, so excuse me if it is tough to read through the image.

I have told you just about all I know about it. I had a lot off problems with my headset, which is why I have 3 headsets now.

I will tell you that you seem to be running on the Nvidia drivers that are installed with your graphics card. If your motherboard has a Realtek audio chip, you do need Realtek drivers to make it work right.

Do you do system images? If you have one for before you did the troubleshooting that seems to have caused the problem, restore that image. Or you could try a system restore ( Option 2 System Restore Windows 10 | Tutorials) which may or may not work right.

Hopefully someone else will come along that can give you better help than I can.

I appreciate your time and advice! :) I believe that my motherboard has a Realtek audio chip since ASUS drivers point me exactly to Realtek drivers. What makes no sense to me is why all sounds disappears after they are installed. Now at least with the NVIDIA drivers I can use my speakers.

As to system images, nope I don't do those. I've thought about a system restore but I will lose important apps etc. Anyway, it really is so confusing how one troubleshooting can result in such a mess.
