@erpster: true enough. I'm not glossing over those details deliberately, but I am quite familiar with them. You are absolutely correct that the driver for any particular motherboard will depend on its chipset (Z170 in the case of my Extreme7+ and Z370 in the case of the Fatal1ty model you mention). Thanks for pointing this out: anybody who wants to update their Realtek sound controller drivers should do only with full knowledge of the requirements and capabilities specific to the target system. This is VERY IMPORTANT to know, understand, and act upon. Well said!

Or you could have given even clearer instructions that doesn't require any unofficial websites. My instructions are quite clear, go to your motherboard or pc makers website and look for a more current equivalent model and see if the new model's driver would install on your older computer. And that's what you actually did indirectly as that 6.0.8890.1 driver is listed on asrock's website for H310CM HDV/M.2.

I knew about the asrock 6.0.8890.1 driver a few weeks ago. How? I read it from station-drivers. But I didn't download it from station-drivers, instead I went to asrock's website and downloaded it from asrock's website directly (so I can update NOT the drivers, but the software components).

    Daily Drivers

Thank you for the great article on Realtek audio drivers. It is good to see a more universal approach to manufacture specific hardware and part of the reason may be that the burden of keeping everything working has fallen on the people who use them. I have a top shelf ASUS but they only provided driver, firmware and software support for two years after the X79 was brought to market. It launched at the tail end of Windows8 so this migration was inevitable but as a consumer its rather maddening when you have otherwise perfectly functional components completely unsupported long before they are outdated by any means. In my case I actually managed to use these new "homebrew" drivers to output via SPDIF to my receiver and have produced the best sound fidelity for movies and music I have ever enjoyed. It lasted for a while but nothing is ever static. The suite I was using is constantly crashing and I am left looking for a simple stable solution.

Hopefully universal drivers will be available for ATI/AMD GPUs too. This new Adrenaline suite is hot trash and I may roll back just to use EyeFinity for multiple monitors. When will manufacturers realize many people just want to tune their settings and arent trying to launch a streaming career. Having universal drivers available is a welcome change.

only Intel seems to have done "universal" (UWD) drivers with their recent HD graphics hardware but I highly doubt that AMD will be doing any "universal" drivers anytime soon

    ---

recently there's a v6.0.8895.1 Realtek UAD driver posted on MS Update Catalog (but for Gigabyte systems only - includes only HDXGigabyte.inf file; definitely not generic)
    https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...x?q=6.0.8895.1

I can use 8895 uad on my gigabyte board - HWIDs "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0887&SUBSYS_1458A186" & "HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0887&SUBSYS_1458B000" were added in this 8895 version

we'll see if a generic 8895 UAD or newer version shows up

    Hi Ed,
I was trying to follow your guide you put on your blog (Link), but when I tried to download the UAD drivers, Chrome gave me an error saying that "This site can't be reached, ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED".
Here is a screenshot of the Error message, this is after I clicked download for the latest driver: Realtek Audio Console REQUIRES a Realtek HD (UAD) Driver!!-screenshot-32-.png.

It could be that the website could just be down.

I saw in your blog post that you also have an ASRock motherboard, the same as me. I was wondering if you could link me those drivers that you downloaded from station-drivers, as they would be compatible with my system.

    Thanks,
    - Claw

the old main ASRock http server is currently down, Claw256 - tested the link to ASRock 8890 driver in Firefox several moments ago

edit - ASRock recently changed servers, so here's the new download link to the ASRock 8890 UAD driver directly from ASRock (I bet Station-Drivers did not know that and the 8890 asrock driver will recently point to the old site and fail).

@erpster4: ASRock doesn't update their stuff often (and for older mobos, not at all). That's the real reason I've turned to Station Drivers and their unofficial, but reasonably up-to-date, offerings. Sorry if this doesn't cut it for you, but it's proven to be a workable strategy for yours truly. Thanks, therefore for sharing the new ASRock link. The ASRock APP Shop "auto-downloader" remains blissfully unaware of the server change, and as usual, ASRock is not keeping its software up with these changes. Sigh.
    Again: thanks for sharing!

Or you can just browse asrock's website, look at what motherboard model they just launched 3 months ago and try that driver. That is essentially what you are doing via station drivers. Asrock releases a new driver on their current motherboard model x, but that new driver can also be installed motherboards from the last 2-3 years. Station driver just didn't tell you that they grab it from a specific model x.

Good observation, @sandyt. If that method works for you, please use it. I find it easier to use Station Drivers myself, but that's just my preferred method. Thanks for sharing your approach.

It also has security implications for installing stuff from 3rd party sources that your tutorial didn't talk about.

Whether you like it or not, your thread became a sticky --- with great power comes great responsibility. You may continue to use whatever method that you like personally, but with the sticky tutorial, I think greater care should be put into it.
