I have 1809 on my laptop. I browsed to the dictionary web site, found a word. theater, and click on the little pronunciation icon and it said theater. I don't have a standalone dictionary. I also don't have the full java installed.

I would clear your browsing data in FF. If you point me to your standalone dictionary (and if it's a free app) I would be happy to install and test.
If it works for you then, I have some problem in my PC. I installed this OS on a formatted clean disc on last Tuesday. This standalone Merriam Webster is not a free software that comes in a CD.

    Please try the following:
pleasure | Definition of pleasure in English by Oxford Dictionaries
Pleasure | Definition of Pleasure by Merriam-Webster

Confirmed. Both work and even tried one in Edge and it worked.

You are getting Audio from some sources.

Have you tried the trouble shooter.

Start > Settings > Update and Security > Troubleshoot > Playing Audio (on right)

Thank you. I just went through the troubleshoot you mentioned. Didn't help.

Since you and Eagle51 can hear the audio, it has something to do with my PC configuration. Only items that I configured was in the Personalization section under Settings. and File Explorer Options in Control Panel I don't see anything that conflict sound.

Have you tried sound driver from your vendor?

I don't have a separate Sound card. It is the on board Audio device. So, the driver is the default WIN 10 driver. I have updated the driver to see any new one, but it is the latest driver. The Mother Board is ASUS P5K Deluxe

I am thinking of reformatting and installing the OS again. Any other idea before II do that..

Go to the Asus Site P5K Deluxe/WiFi-AP Driver & Tools | Motherboards | ASUS USA
Choose Windows 7 i(ie) 32bit or 64bit, as your OS (the last version which offers the Audio Download) After downloading the Zipped driver file, Extract it to your download location open the File and Right click Setup.exe and choose Properties/Compatibility and make it Compatible with Windows 7. And put a check in Run As Administrator. Then double click it to install.
See if that helps. It may not help, but it certainly won't hurt.

Spunk, thank you so much. Yes, the audio is working for words after updating into that driver.

Thank you Caledon Ken and Eagle51for your time helping me.

Now you have to tell Windows to lay off the driver updates. Option 4 this tutorial.

Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10

Additionally keep that driver somewhere safe and Spunk's install instructions.

Left on its own Windows will update driver to the failing one and the next feature update will also replace it. You can always try driver after a feature update, they may have corrected, but you will always have this driver to reinstall. Do not count on vendor to keep files available. Maybe even get a copy of the current set.

    Glad we could help.
