Have to reinstall audio driver weekly since Spring Creator's Update

    Hi, all.

Long time no post - things have been running pretty smoothly 'til now. I installed the Spring Creator's Update on the 14th of May without any issues. In the last two weeks, I have had to troubleshoot sound issues and reinstall my audio driver once a week. This is preceded by a total loss of audio. I reinstall, and everything's fine...but I have no clue as to why this keeps happening.

    Please could somebody help?

Can you elaborate a bit more? What happens? Driver gets corrupted? Driver gets uninstalled? Any error messages or event viewer entries?

No error messages, it just stops working. Doesn't play the test sounds...or if it does, I don't hear them. Then I have to reinstall.
Not sure how to check event logs.

Is Windows 10 applying a different driver? Use Device Management to see what version is installed when working. Then compare it to what is installed when it stops working.

Also, when it stops working, check to make sure your output device hasn't changed in Sounds.

This is the Toshiba L50-C in your specs? If so, it has a Conexant sound card. The combination of Toshiba and Conexant for laptops of that period is well known for overheating problems. If that Conexant card gets too hot it has a built-in thermal cut-out that cuts off the drive to the speakers. I had the same problem on my Toshiba L750. You can confirm that the cut-out has been triggered by plugging in headphones, if this is the problem you have then the headphones will continue to work after the speakers have cut out.

Unfortunately all the pages on the Toshiba forum that referred to this problem (along with all other posts of that vintage) have now been deleted by Toshiba on the grounds that those models are obsolete. This thread refers to some of them though...

I had the same problem started a few weeks ago. The overheating of the chip is the problem as stated in one of the solutions which requires opening up the laptop and putting a heat sink on the audio chip. My investigation shows that a.) on my L755-S5244 there is a vent just to the right of the Chip located on the front left corner of the laptop. b) when the speakers are on you can feel the heat increasing by placing a few fingers on the left corner of the laptop. Then the sound stops. c.) if a plug in my ear buds the sound comes on and the left corner will cool down.

Ripping open your laptop and fitting a home-made heatsink to the sound card is perhaps too extreme a solution. I found a registry fix that, while it doesn't stop the overheating, does mean that I can get the sound back by pausing for four seconds. I describe it here...

Nice catch, Bree. I use headphones as a matter of course, and the sound completely dies. It's weird how the problem has only started now.
