Low sound volume?

Since updating my wife's and my Sister-N-Law's laptops to the April update and the CU the volume on their laptops is low even though the volume is set to 100. Is this a known problem and is there a fix? I have tried deleting and reinstalling the sound card drivers. My wife's laptop is using the latest High Definition Audio Device driver and my Sister-N-law's laptop is using the latest Realtek High Definition Audio driver. Selecting Loudness Equalization helped a little.

This is a shot in the dark.

If you are using WMP then note that some updates reset WMP volume level to its default of 50%. This acts in series with the system volume so even if that is 100% the overall result would still be 50%. You would have to adjust WMP volume to full to allow the system volume level to be in full control.

I'm afraid it's a never ending problem. I also have the low sound + a distorted sound problem when the volume goes very high, above 70.

I have tried several versions of Realtek High Definition Audio drivers and I have settled to the one recommended by Microsoft for my HW_ID (6.0.1.7944), which is quite old. Not that is solved the problem, but I just gave up installing and trying new drivers!!

Would an older driver be in order then.

If this works I would then disable driver updates.

The Laptops that the sound is low, are they recent Win 10 hardware or old hardware that was upgraded to Win 10? If they are "old" it may just be incompatibility. I suspect the one with just the generic High Definition Audio is in that category.

Mine is a 2016 hp laptop, with a Broadwell i5 5200U 2.2 GHz CPU, 8 GB DDR3 RAM, Intel HD 5500 DIsplay and Realtek HD Audio. I don't consider it 'Old', but again I might be wrong.
