Philips DVD-Rom drive not recognized and no sound after 1803 update

I have a Dell Dimension E520, Intel Core 2 Duo, 32 bit Windows 10 Pro, 6GB RAM (3GB usable), 2 internal hard drives (160GB and 1Tb), 2 cd/dvd drives, SB sound card, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 display. Everything worked perfectly fine on Monday before the update. I shut-down as normal, and upon re-boot, yesterday, May 1, 208, I immediately checked for any updates. The update for 1803 started immediately. After the updated finished, and I rebooted, my sound card wasn't working and one of the cd/dvd drives was not being recognized in Device Manager with a Code 10 error. When I attempted to update the drivers, the system tells me I'm using the best drivers. Uninstalling both devices and rebooting didn't wok. The only thing that works was to restore my system back to the 1709 version; however, Windows Update wants to re-install 1803 update so I had to do a delay install to June 6th.

Not sure why everything works under the 1709 version; yet, it doesn't under 1803.

Not to be a "wise guy" but I'm amazed an old Dimension E520 (or any Dimension model) is working well in Win 10. I had an E510 and it struggled when I upgraded from XP to Vista, even with an upgraded CPU and max memory.


There are no drivers for CD/DVD drives other than the default Windows/Microsoft installed drivers. That is the reason for not finding any other drivers.


There are no drivers for the sound on the Dell downloads. Dell only supports XP and Vista on this model and neither the XP or Vista drivers are Win 10 compatible.


Check the BIOS (and maybe even reset it) in case it was somehow corrupted by the upgrade since two devices are not working. Note any BIOS customizations before you do the reset as you will have to re-enter those after the reset. To reset the BIOS, with the PC powered off, open the case and remove the CR2032 CMOS backup battery located on the motherboard for at least 10 minutes. Reinstall the battery, observing polarity. Power on and see if this helps. Considering the age, if you have never replaced the CR2032 battery this would be a good time to do it.


I do some support on the Dell forums and haven't seen any posts from Dimension users about Win 10 or Win 10 upgrades. Not to say there aren't others with Win 10, just no posts that I've seen.

There might be a reason that things went wrong with 1803, but I'd guess that things are corrupted.

Before proceeding with anything drastic, I suggest imaging C:. Perhaps onto the 1TB drive, to save time.

For the sound card, if it's the SB X-Fi Xtremegamer that Dell lists, there are reasonably new drivers for it: http://support.creative.com/Products...%20XtremeGamer

I suggest that if you want to install them, uninstall the card first and delete the existing drivers.

To make a suggestion that you probably won't like much, you could treat this as an opportunity to switch to the 64 bit version of Win 10. (Your digital license would activate that, just like the 32 bit version.) It'd have to be a clean install, so you'd have to be prepared to re-install all applications. That would eliminate Windows corruption. One thing you'd get out of it would be access to all 6GB of RAM. I'm not 100% sure that your CPU supports all of the requirements for X64, but it's very likely.
