After reading bad news about compatibility of Classsic Shell in latest Windows , I decided to uninstall it and went to Open Shell .
I still dont regret it , Open Shell works exellent on my 1809 , b.t.w ; did not notice much difference between Classic and Open Shell...........
And , why should you update this startmenu , when its working fine .....??

When I posted in this forum today I did a search to find it. I thought that this was the thread that one of the Devs of Open Shell posted in. That was the reason for my post.

I think those of us that just use the program to recover or win 7 or XP GUI and start menu. Could be some people are finding some more extensive customization aren't working as they used to????
Personally, I block the Lock screen and have a custom start button and basic windows 7 GUI, and I'm very happy with ver 131 on 1809 134 on 2 desktops and one Notebook

Windows 10 build 15063 worked great but MS finds it necessary to update their builds twice a year . That being said CS 4.3.1 is working great and there was no need for Open Shell but for a couple of builds. The Github looks like it is in Greek and I have asked there for other things and never got a reply. So I will keep using CS and those that Like OS should keep using it. It only takes minutes to change.

I just clean installed 1809 last week and the original CS 4.3.1 installed without a hitch and is running just fine for me.

A little while back generally once each login session, launching Open shell started causing explorer to hang. Had to terminate any other explorer.exe and launch a new one via task manager.

This I believe I have solved by upgrading the Intel HD Graphics 530 driver manually.
    Intel® Driver & Support Assistant
I believe the problem started when Windows Update upgraded the driver.

The crash occurred usually within an hour of log on, but only after using Open Shell a few times.

I found reference on the Classic Shell forum to exactly this symptom; comments indicated it is triggered because it scans files in various areas (what for I don't know). Mention was made of an older Realtek driver for example, and .cpl files.

    Example:
Classic Shell View topic - Crashes Explorer in Win 10 Creator

I followed the idea of using Sysinternals Procdump to get information on explorer hanging.
(Reliability monitor showed explorer hanging, but no useful information).
This listed two files related to the graphics driver, in
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\

Not exactly the first place you'd think to look.
I updated the driver from 23.20.16.4973 to 25.20.100.6471

Note that once explorer has crashed and been relaunched like this, launching troubleshooters from Settings fails (error message seemingly about permissions). Launching from the Control Panel still works.

So far no crash after several hours. But I need to give it longer to be more certain.

Have you seen anything like this?

I am on 4973 and using OpenShell. I get an occasional explorer hang but nothing regular.

Hi, Is the hang on launching Open Shell? (Start button)?

    This is worth trying:
    “D:\Utilities\Sysinternals Suite\procdump.exe” -e -h explorer.exe -w

(use your path to procdump.exe of course)

    - waits for explorer to hang (leave cmd prompt window open) and then lists the outcome.

Inspecting the file list can point to a cause.

As to why Open Shell causes this- well....??? that's one for the developers.
