    Thanks!
Well, dalchina, I get what Edwin gets. Seems to run ok, no crashes. Some parts are awkward (used to CS). But...for the life of me, I cannot find how to do this. The separate pane for pinning items, Like CS. This is from their site documentation.

After staring at that for a while, it looks suspiciously like CS. An old one. Hmmmmmmmm..............

Hi, I added a Dummy group using the Manage Groups menu,
Classic Shell no longer in development, and now open source-create-group.png
and now see (I don't think it was there before) the items in pale grey from Progams:
Classic Shell no longer in development, and now open source-untitled.png

I think these are logical placeholders - not the traditional 'real' folders on disk, so you can freely arrange items there without affecting their presentation as viewed by another start menu program.

    This may help:

I can't presently see how to get a skin like that illustrated as you show, but haven't spent much time on this.

To me it's a more viable option than, say, Start10, although relatively clunky in some ways.

There are a couple of buttons that readily allow the addition of shortcuts to folders and files too.

However, if I click on the taskbar, its start button is greyed out until I click on its tray icon....??

Hmm, kind of begs the question as to why, with what is supposed to be a consumer product, MS changes things so consumers suffer by introducing compatibility problems. Ok, maybe a start menu is different - but witness the problems with Epson Perfection scanners... (provided of course their software conforms to whatever API spec applies).

Anyway, that's more philosophy and not worth exploring.

Hope either this is a temporary glitch (Insider) or we find a reasonably tolerable alternative.
Microsoft is very much concerned with maintaining compatibility for programs that follow the established standards. Many such programs dating back to the Windows 95 era still work without issues and without the need for compatibility settings.

But Classic Shell isn't like that. The Windows 10 start menu and other things do not support the kind of changes that Classic Shell makes. So it must resort to the use of undocumented functions, structures, and other undocumented behavior. Microsoft has always explicitly warned developers not to do these things or compatibility will suffer. Undocumented behavior is subject to change at any time without notice. Classic Shell could avoid compatibility issues if it confined itself to documented and supported OS behavior but it's capabilities would be very limited.

Agreed- hence my comment about conforming. If it doesn't, well, its fate was pretty much inevitable, alas.

Well, I think CS was absolutely needed for windows 8, there was just too much of a loss of productive time transitioning from the Normal GUI to the Metro GUI I'm wondering now if no one picks up CS if it won't just be more productive in the future going forward that we don't just learn the Windows 10 interface.
I have made all my people that I work on there computer learn the Windows 10 GUI I haven't recommended to any of them since windows 8 to use CS, I guess I'll wait until CS no longer works and just force my self to learn the new GUI or maybe just uninstall on this particular computer and go ahead and learn how to live with out CS

CS has the ability to change the File Explorer but I never used that only the start menu, That Start X or whatever does not interest me. I can get used to Windows 10 as is if I have to, it is not like I am using only the Start Menu , once you go online or start a game it's gone..

I should've added that W8 was acceptable with something like Classic Shell installed.

I find the default W10 Start Menu acceptable.

I believe those "untested updates" are what the Windows 10 Insider Program is all about. The team brings Windows 10 Alpha to a Beta stage, then turns it over to us as Insiders to see what we can break and/or find in the way of bugs.

    Insiders = Beta Testers
    Insider Program = Beta Program
Most Linux Distros have no choice but to rely on volunteers (I assume the corporate Distros, Red Hat & OpenSUSE, have in-house testers).
It's not sufficient to rely on outside enthusiasts to properly test software that powers most of the world's desktops (especially software that they can't access the source code of).

How many enthusiasts have the resources necessary to (for example) "Fuzz Test" millions of lines of Windows code?

That sort of testing should be performed by an entity with a lot of computing power, manpower and resources (i.e. something like a giant multi-billion dollar corporation that produces software).

FWIW, I'm an ordinary consumer and I'm pretty pleased with Windows 10. Although there are features I'll never use, others will be glad to have them. Also, there are many new features I'm really happy to have.
If you've never had problems, it probably is difficult to understand why people are complaining.

After multiple failed attempts to install 1709 on my W10 installs (Home & Pro VM) I restored my backup copies of 1703, I blocked their network access and the 1703 versions "haven't skipped a beat" ever since.

To my surprise, I've been able to get VS2015 and Hyper-V to run (almost) glitch free on my W10 Pro VM.

Microsoft doesn't rely on enthusiasts alone, although there are at least a million of us. There are several levels of testers that have the necessary resources, including IT departments and employees of large corporations. OEMs also test. We enthusiasts are only a drop in the bucket of testers.

Right on, Josey..agree with you - I do not use CS File Explorer either - just the Start Menu, and I have the Windows 10 Start Menu set up as I want it and use it part of the time. Have tried StartX, StartIsBack, and Stardock's Start10 and none of them are to my liking as much as Classic Start.

The one above is the closest I have found to CS , but not sure if it will work with RS5. There is a Video with it.
