Ah, that explains it. As far as I can make out, 2012 should be able to use project files created in 2011. Microsoft changed the project file format with version 2009. Wikipedia lists the version history.

Yes, and the offline installer is more likely to work properly on Win7. But I would wait a while until you sure any projects you made in 2011 can be opened and used in 2012. There are some other differences too, see the Wikipedia link for more on that.

As I haven't any old projects and whilst I'm getting started with it on Win 10, I'll have a go later on with Win 7.

It's really good to be back with WMM as I get completely confused with all the latest Video offerings and all their widghles and whidgets....

Thanks again Bree and everyone for all your help, it's really been appreciated

Actually, I have made my life exceedingly complicated. I don't actually do any editing in Movie Maker any more. I use FFmpeg, an insanely complex but powerful command line utility with unix-like syntax. Even professionals are known to use it. Movie Maker is still however the easiest way I know to locate edit points down to an individual frame, which is all I use it for now. :)

Thanks for that. Was that Win10 you installed version 1709, or something earlier? I haven't tested the offline installer in 1709 yet.

P.S. The Offline Installer link you posted on Windows Essentials 2012 will reach end of support on January 10th 2017 , post #7 does not work anymore. It says it cannot be downloaded. I just tried it 10 minutes ago.

That is correct. Those links in post #7 were direct links to Microsoft, who removed the download files from their server on the 21 March. The archived version of the page in the Internet Archive Wayback machine does however work, it downloads an archived copy of the offline installer from the Internet Archive, not from Microsoft (and yes, I've checked and downloaded it today).
