Please Help Me: HD Tune Alternative?

    Hi,

I just need an app that can check if my hard drives are damaged so I can know if they need to be replaced.

I'm currently using the free version of HD Tune 2.55.

I just checked the HD Tune website and the HD Tune 2.55 app version I'm currently using on my PC was last updated in February 2008...

HD Tune Pro was just updated very recently, but it costs $35USD and that's too much for me...

    Any advice would be great!

Unfortunately you missed the giveaway of Hard Disk Sentinel I posted a few days ago.
One which includes a surface scan can be useful (Crystal Diskinfo doesn't) but you can get separate freeware such as Macrorit Diskscanner which provides that or others in the above

Do the apps on that page do as good a job as HD Tune for checking the health of a HDD and if it's going to die soon?

    Thanks!

Each software may perform the same named test such as SMART but the software has different algorithms.

We just had a thread where there were problems detected with one software and the other was normal.

So if you have significant concerns about the HD perform several tests.

Some drives cannot be tested with health, full error scanning with the freeware and can only be tested with benchmarks.
For these drives we use Atto.

We commonly use these 4 software programs for SMART testing:
    1) HD Tune
    2) Crystal Mark
    3) HD Sentinel

For SMART, short, and long generic we use Sea Tools for Windows.

    Your replies are much appreciated!

The HDD I'm using is a Seagate 2TB HDD.

I'm looking at trying out SeaTools for Windows.

Is this the correct link for SeaTools for Windows?

The software programs have different software for the identical test. Most of the tests are SMART which is used to predict drive failure.
The Sea Tools for Windows uses SMART, short, and long generic testing.
The Sea Tools does not provide an error scan. It produces a pass/fail result.
So we often run HD Tune or HD Sentinel for the error and health scans.

This is the information for Sea Tools for Windows:
Run Sea tools for windows on your drive using SMART, short and long generic tests:

    Okay, thanks!

I'm trying to use Seatools now, but I just realised that I posted the link to the "Legacy" version?

Which is the correct Seatools app for me to use?

Also, I'm looking at HD Sentinel now, but it's not a free app?
