MS Ofice 2016 crash when inserting hyperlink

User @Zardoc posted warning about puting GodMode (access to all Control panel items) shortcut to specific folders, as it will make Office apps crash when inserting hyperlink.

I've confirmed this behavior, as have had exactly the same problem on one computer. Word crashed when trying to insert hyperlink to a file on the PC. In my case GodMode was created on desktop, but was crashing Word when trying to create hyperlink at totally different folder...

Discussion was going on in Insider announcement thread, but think it deserves its separate thread. And, if anybody doesn't know what Godmode is (all Control panel items)

    Solution again.
If any of your Office applications crash, when trying to create hyperlink to local file, check if you have GodMode (all Control panel items) shortcut or folder. Delete it.

Hope you found this info on time. It took me weeks before finding what is preventing me to inserting hyperlinks...
With Microsoft moving more and more commands from Control panel to settings, It's easier to give up on God mode...

    And welcome to Tenforums :)

I had no idea this was a problem. Granted, I have not had problems inserting hyperlinks into documents (yet?), but glad I saw this thread.

this is exactly why I started this thread... Tenforums are very high on every search engine :)

btw, it took me more than one reinstall of Office and worrying about why can't I insert hyperlink on my PC, while I can on every other...

I have just joined (March 2019) specifically to say THANK YOU for the info in this thread; "never in a kazillion years would I have guessed this to be the cause" sums it up perfectly! I was wading through all sorts of stuff about repairing PowerPoint online and reinstalling Windows, and this thread saved me from a huge amount of unnecessary pain - delete the God Mode link, who would have thought?!?

    Hi there.

On Office 2010 hyperlinks work fine in Outlook, EXCEL, Power point and word.

MS Ofice 2016 crash when inserting hyperlink-link.png

Another good reason why I'm staying with Office 2010 until it runs out of support in Q4 2020 -- there's almost nothing other than grief that I've seen in newer editions of office to make me want to upgrade - especially as the office 2010 I have is a VL (Volume license) version --from the old technet days !!!. Still gets updates etc.

Anybody whose used outlook 2016/2019/365 must know by know my favourite rant of how Ms has totally hosed up the way of manually setting up email accounts - especially if you have different passwords / user names / servers on inbound and outbound mail servers where the automatic config screens are useless.

You can still get the old proper classical screens by using the app in control panel -- it's called outlook 2016 for outlook2016/2019 and outlook/365.

    Cheers
