    Permanently hiding system tray icon

    Hey all,

I was looking for a way to hide a certain program's system tray icon. If I use the built in hiding option it still shows when I click the arrow, which is not what I want. I want to completely hide it (stealth). I've been looking for programs to do this but they're all outdated. I wouldn't even know what to do in registry either. Obviously I do not want to quit/disable the program. I still want it to run on the background. Any tips anyone?

Hello Dan, and welcome to Ten Forums.

    What program is it?

The program may have a setting to turn on/off it's system tray icon.

It's called ShareX. It's a screenshot program that uploads directly to imgur or anything similar. But I don't want my guests to right click the ShareX system tray icon and see all the screenshots. I can't disable the tray icon within the program either.

In that case, you might contact the developer to see if he or she may be able to add an option to turn its icon on/off.

Well that would be my last solution. There's gotta be a way to just hide system tray icons? And not normally hiding but literally hiding

No need, there already is one. I've just installed ShareX 11.9.1 on my test machine to see.

Open ShareX, it's in Application settings... > General. There's also an option in Integration to turn off 'Run ShareX when Windows starts'.

But none of these really solve the privacy issues. A guest could still find ShareX on the Start menu and run it to look at the Screenshots folder. What does solve the problem is not to let your guests use your account. Give them their own log in account and they will see their own Screenshots folder - there's a separate one for each user stored in their own %appdata% folder.

Yes I saw that but when I close the program it doesn't close to system tray then. It actually quits the program. I guess I can make guest accounts but I was just wondering if there was a way to make programs run in "stealth".

If you untick 'Show tray icon' in 'Application settings... > General' and delete the desktop shortcut for ShareX then it is still running, but shows no visible sign that it's there.

This will hide it from the casual observer, but a determined 'snooper' could still open it from the Start menu and see your screenshots.

That would do it for me though

Your choice, if 'hidden' is good enough for you. You could always have another log in for your more 'untrustworthy' guests to use (I'd make it a Standard user to be extra safe )
