..when I try to set it as default for all the files it can open, it just doesn't appear on the list to select it. What can I do? I run Windows 10 Pro Fall Creators Update. I would like to use the "traditional" Default Applications control, if available, I don't like the modern one that is very limited. How can I access it?
Unfortunately you can't any more. That part of Control Panel disappeared when Fall Creators Update was released. Although the Control Panel version could still be opened if you knew the right command line (and in early builds still worked) its been disabled since build 16299.309 (maybe earlier) and no longer has any effect. MS only let you use the Settings app now.

Really TERRIBLE Microsoft is making Windows more like a phone and treating Windows users as the same idiots that they treate WP users as. Maybe some day file systems will also be **not** accessible to users, we'll see only photos, musics, games but not the file behind 'em. People are always been fooled these days. Yes it will be super convenient for those don't want to think at all, but whoever win except large corporations? E.g. They can easily make a music only available for few days even if the file of this music is in users' hard drive: if you don't pay again they just detele it. Nowadays they're already doing such nonsense however we still can copy the file somewhere or just zip it. Well perhaps people just do not need to think just like Nasi leaders said? Who knows.

Well these comments do not answer my question. If you have a desktop application that does not appear on the selection list and you want to make it default, how you do it? I would like to avoid associating every single file extension it can open manually with the application. I would prefer a more convenient solution like "make this application default for all the files it can open", like we could do in the "traditional" control. Any way to do that? Thank you.

Copy the following code into notepad and save it as a .reg file then merge it. Should fix the issue.

    Thanks a lot Edwin!

To answer your question, try here in the settings panel:Is Windows Photo Viewer gone?-default_apps.png. That should do what you're seeking to do. This is on v1803.

With respect, you didn't read the question. There are some older apps that do NOT appear in the list for 'Set defaults by app' even though they are properly installed. Try setting defaults for my Paint Shop Pro 7, for example.

Paint Shop Pro DID appear in the no longer available Control Panel version of 'set defaults by program'. I'm afraid laboriously doing it extension by extension is the only viable method now.

You're right, I missed that tidbit. I did notice that when 7zip 64bit didn't show in that list of apps. Ditto for notepad++. For those two, they do have a way of setting defaults for all the file types you want them to open inside of their settings. That said, Windows Photo Viewer is in the default apps list with only 2 defaults listed.

So I have this issue in 1803, I cannot assign Windows Photo Viewer to specifix extensions, or even default applications anymore. I was able to in previous versions, but not 1803, anyone else run into that? The default app just doesn't exist anymore.

Windows Photo Viewer still exists in 1803 and 1809. You may be able to get it to reappear by re-enabling it as per this tutorial.

There is a separate known issue however in setting default apps after the latest cumulative updates for both 1809 and 1803.

    Microsoft said:
After installing this update, some users cannot set Win32 program defaults for certain app and file type combinations using the Open with… command or Settings > Apps > Default apps.

In some cases, Microsoft Notepad or other Win32 programs cannot be set as the default.

That is what I meant, I have it enabled, but cannot set it as default.
