I have to say, your post here made me dig out my old Brother software and try to "fix" my installation, which I just did.
The original Brother software disk came with some "extras", one of which was Paperport SE - that is the OCR software that came with the Brother printer. I researched it, and found out how to set it up, so it would scan formatted text to MSWord, and it worked. So, sounds to me like that's what you want. Just don't lose the disk, as the software download from the Brother website will not have that in it.
