Why are you not using WordPad? It have so many more options to use, you can even paste pictures in between your
text. Use bold letter on just one word, highlight and choose the "padding" you like.

You will find it in your Program (x86) folder under Windows NT > Accessories > wordpad.exe.

Make a shortcut on your Desktop and browse to it in the shown location, then you have it at hand.

Because that's overkilling the overkill for what I use Notepad for.

Try the reset of Notepad. Documented here: How to Reset Notepad to Its Default Settings on Windows
Good suggestion but it didn't work.

Just for s&g I'll add my thought: Notepad is not a word processor like WordPad which in reality is a 'lite' version of Word like the older Write in Win3.xx. Notepad doesn't have many features and/or settings and wasn't intended to, mostly used by programmers for writing code/programs and doesn't add 'hidden' code like a word processor does. It does support editing HTML documents but requires more knowledge of HTML than using GUI programs like FrontPage or Expression Web.

I'd go with something like suggested, Notepad2 or Notepad++, both good alternatives with more features and free.

A note: Write is still in C:\Windows but when double-clicked opens WordPad.
Maybe I should upgrade my Windows 3.1....
