    Word document opens in gibberish


    I am using Word 2007. A few of the documents I transferred from my old computer have opened in gibberish e.g

RCq,cÊ[Q·$‡'“JQ½˜ÞžéfÞU’PÄaèzÕy›;ˆ•Ô†ÇÍÞ*{Ñ»  *Uˆn[1]Æx*ÇÍj
    The method recommended by Msoft https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/893672/how-to-open-documents-by-using-the-open-and-repair-feature-in-wordis hopeless, and I cannot actually find the open and repair option mentioned.

    I hope I can rack your brains for a solution, please!

    Just a thought- which language were the original documents in?

    And of course, do you have a backup copy?

    Standard UK English. The backups are in same state. I also looked for earlier ones that might have been unaffected but deleted with Recuva

    Try to open it with the online version.

    Microsoft Word Online - Work together on Word documents


    I had a similar problem with wrong characters set in LibreOffice.
    OpenOffice and WPS Office opened it fine. You might give it a shot.

    You could upload one if not sensitive...
