Windows Media Player Exception code: 0xc0000005 file CompPkgSup.DLL

    Hello

My copy of Windows Media Player has decided to fail whenever I try to use it. It gives message:

Windows Media Player Exception code: 0xc0000005 file CompPkgSup.DLL-capture.png

Investigating Event Viewer I find the following:

Faulting application name: wmplayer.exe, version: 12.0.14393.82, time stamp: 0x57a55d49
Faulting module name: CompPkgSup.DLL, version: 10.0.14393.953, time stamp: 0x58ba5c12
    Exception code: 0xc0000005Fault offset: 0x000000000000349d
Faulting process ID: 0x2110Faulting application start time: 0x01d29daf15ffab4a
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\CompPkgSup.DLL
    Report ID: 75c8d5b9-2e77-474d-b774-e7069f11dfb6
    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

As far as I know this might have been caused by the Windows update dated 14 03 2017, following which I now have Windows 10 64 bit Pro Version 1607 Build 14393.953.

    Any ideas?

    Mr Morgan.

Hi, please have a look at the News section, and the thread for this update.

Some, but not all, are experiencing this.

Yes, so I see. A shame that no one has identified a solution. It seems that we may have to await a fix by MS.

You could always uninstall this update and block it- wait for the next and hope. Clearly as some see this problem and others not, there is some potentially identifiable difference- knowing that might point to a fudge.

And there will be work-arounds- like using other players.

Same error. Occurred on both my desktop and my laptop (both HP computers that I upgraded from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10 Pro a while ago). I figured it was the update that blew my Windows Media Player, because it was working fine on both computers before the update.

A commercial company that found their product was crashing after the update has identified a workaround. Links to their support forum in this post.

The next update may well be the Creators Update. I've uninstalled and hidden this update and will wait...

Clearly as some see this problem and others not, there is some potentially identifiable difference- knowing that might point to a fudge.
One difference seems to be the format of media file being played. For me it only happens for .TS files.

And there will be work-arounds- like using other players.
VLC uses its own codecs and so is immune to this problem.

    Word from Microsoft

I notice that https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/...date-kb4013429 describes this issue as "Windows DVD Player (and 3rd party apps that use Microsoft MPEG-2 libraries) crashes when run.". A fix is being worked on.

Sounds like the same problem myself and other people have been getting with WMC on Windows 10, that was caused by the last update. The solution was to get old copies (2016) of CompPkgSup.dll 32bit and 64bit and overwrite the latest problem ones in System32 and SysWOW64. I did this by copying from a different computer, but I think previous versions are in WinSxS.

I got this info from My Digital Life forums, and my TV viewing on WMC is now back to normal.
