New laptop set up yesterday - Windows 10 locked up today

As helped yesterday I set up My Son's new ACER Laptop (ES1572 intel i3 core 3MB L3 Cashe 4MB RAM 1TB HDD). Task completed.
Today it is brought to me with The Screen (locked up as found later) carrying the message indicating Microsoft configuring the computer and Please don't Turn off, and the balls in a circle moving indicating something is happening. So it has to be left alone. Yesterday this took several hours. I had to let it finish as it did up to 100% eventually.
Today after 45minutes I had had enough.
Telephoned to the Internet provider, to see if there was a problem - None. helped me speedtest.zen.co.uk and the Download speeds on the Laptop were between 17Mbps and 18.01Mbps and Upload speeds between 0.93Mbps and 1.07Mbps That is Not too bad I believe for normal home use.
I note on the list of Programs There is, Dated today:-

I cannot see the sense in having this laptop locked up for hours every day, for little if any benefit to me or my son.
I believe there is a problem in removing Dashleane, and I will probably use AVG instead of McAfee.
An estimate of 50minutes before I gave up.(3000 seconds at 17Mbps)
Is something wrong, and if so how can I solve the problem? I can delete Dashlane and McAfee thats approx 227MB,
Maybe Microsoft Office 365 that's another 131MB as it's superfluous.
How about stopping Microsoft Making Upgrades, if not needed. Say do it once a month, not daily.

Dashlane is a password/form filler that you can uninstall. I would uninstall McAfee and Office 365 since they are trial versions. You already have free Windows Defender for anti-virus although you can replace with AVG later, if you prefer. However, none of these is causing the slow startup and the disk space they occupy is minimal on a 1tb drive.
Depending on how long the acer was sitting on the shelf, it may be well behind on updates, especially if it's not updated to Win10 1607, the Anniv edition. Thus, the long download times and 'configuring, don't turn off message' at start.

Start here if you can get on- hit Win+R keys and type winver. Report back which version you are currently on so we can determine how much updating remains. You can disable the auto restart by changing active hrs in Action Center/All settings/ Update & security/Change active hours. Then you can do an update on your schedule by downloading the latest updates on your own and installing yourself instead of in the background. Beware, some of these update packages are around 1,000 mb so it will take a while. Good Luck

Hi mrgeek - Thank you for responding, before I start - yesterday after waiting the 50 minutes I had the laptop - I forced a shutdown and and eventually it seemed the normal start up - pretty scene you click - and the enter password -
That's from where I am starting today at 09:06 GMT Wed 1st Feb 2007. I have the laptop opened as if it is normal adjacent to the PC I am using to Communicate with.
Laptop States:- Microsoft Windows Version 1607 (OS Build 14393.693) The Windows 10 Home operating system etc etc Trademark and Rights protection.
In the Cortana window strip I Typed;- Action Center/All settings/ Update & security/Change active hours this obtained a Bing search of Google type style of Pages with links to 2.4 million links- How to use Windows 10 action centre - I will have to look at some of these - any Idea to any particular one - I did see a link to W7 & W8 forums, but nothing specific to our forum here.

Congratulations ! You are now on the latest build. I ditto the prev poster's suggestion to uninstall McAfee. I did it on two acers I service since it is a trial version and Defender is free and reliable. PS; If you DO use a 3rd party AV like AVG, I suggest to disable it before starting a manual Update thru Action Center or while an automatic is running. It sometimes sees files never seen, isolates them and breaks the update

This was an instruction tree. I meant for you to go to Action Center (icon in very lower R, next to clock) and follow the click path above which will take you to this screen. Here you can manually check for Updates at the top to confirm that you are current. When given the option here or if Action Center pops up a notification with sound, I just 'Restart Now' to install any new updates and get them over with.


To address your particular situation, there are 2 options. Using the 'Change active hours", the below self explanatory dialogue pops up.

Set which hours of day you typically expect to be active and update install restarts are postponed until outside (computer must be powered on to finish, however) The other is 'Restart options' which allows you to set a particular time but only for the current update.
