Load one of the applications, Word for example, and create a blank document.

Now click 'File', then click 'Account' and look at what your version number is under 'Office Updates'.

If it's not Version 1612 (Build 7668.2074) then you can update to the latest version by clicking the 'Update Options' icon and then clicking 'Update Now'.

This will work unless your administrator has put you on a deferred stream of Office.

Current version and build numbers for Office ProPlus can be found here.

    Channel Version Build Release date
    Current 1612 7668.2074 January 31, 2017
    First Release for Deferred 1609 7369.2102 January 10, 2017
    Deferred 1605 6965.2117 January 10, 2017
    Deferred1 1602 6741.2105 January 10, 2017

1 There are always two versions of Deferred Channel that are supported. Version 1605 contains newer features and is supported until June 2017. Version 1602 is supported only until February 2017.

I don't know why Microsoft make it so difficult... my best guess would be that it's to prevent users who've had Office installed by an administrator (that's the main reason MSI deployments are used) from installing the updates themselves.

It seems like you've got to manually install the update from the Microsoft Download Center as per the link you found. It's certainly far less convenient especially if the updates aren't rolled-up (I don't know whether they are or not).

I always recommend users activate the 'other Microsoft products' option inside Windows 10 settings to keep everything up-to-date.
