Trying to set Wordpad default to single space

Hi! I'd like to change Wordpad's default to single space, so that I won't have to go into Line Spacing to change this on every document.

    Thanks!

Hello Joan and welcome to TenForums :)

Create an empty document called document.rtf with all the settings that you want to use such as line spacing of 1.0 and then save it.

Change the Start Menu shortcut for WordPad so that it always opens with this default file.

To do this add this new file to the end of the WordPad target location so that it always starts with your preferred file that contains the settings you want.

The start menu shortcut for Wordpad is found by right clicking it in the Start Menu selecting More and then Open File Location:

Right-click the Wordpad shortcut to access its properties and then add the file location to the end of the Target as shown below changing xxxxx to your username.

Hope this will work for you.

I need a bit more information please?

I think maybe I have not read the instructions properly but my head is spinning now & I need to take a break and maybe look at this another time.

Meanwhile, I shall need to find my User name and change the properties setting.

Any way of explaining this step again for a not very technical person will be appreciated.

I attach what I get when I open those properties.

Thank you very much to the person who first raised the issue and the very helpful answer - I am sorry I do not have sufficient basic understanding to complete this at present.

Basically, you have to make a blank documents with your preferred settings (fonts, paragraph etc), and then open that document instead of program itself. Save the document (.rtf) on your desktop and remember to save it under new name after you edited it.

Just tried this and it doesn't remember the font size. Picked Calibri 14 and saved it, made it the default file to open when I started Wordpad. Remembered line spacing, margins and font name but not font size.

Think you have to write at least one letter in that document (Default.rtf)

Honestly, while respecting the principle of free choice, I can't think of any relevant reason to not installing some kind of free office program (like LibreOffice, or similar), if you tend to write more than couple of documents per month. Setting default font, paragraph settings etc are all good reasons to try some Office application.

Found anther resource to the same (or very similar) solution. It works, tested it on Windows 10..

MS Forums | How To Retain Personal Font Settings in WordPad

In Windows 10 there is no ShellNew folder in Windows folder. So, make one in another place (Desktop), put modified tmeplate file in it, and copy it to Windows folder.

In Template.rtf, format font and paragraph to you liking and press Return a couple of time you'll have a couple of formatted lines.
The last line can+t be formatted, it will default to usual setting

I just tried it and it doesn't work. Doesn't remember font name or size. Setup template.rtf as directed, using Arial and 14pt, line spacing 1.0. Made reg change as follows:

Strange, it works for me. Did you edit your template.rtf, and add couple of lines, all formatted as wanted?

Started from taskbar, you now select new file template. Or new from context menu. Starting Wordpad by itself won't change defaults
