Trying to make Java work on Windows 10

I'm trying to make Java work on windows 10 so that I can open and install programs such as Optifine and XMage. I have installed the 64 bit, (as that is what my computer is) however I can't make the files open with java, or be executable. I can provide further system details if needed, but I have been working the last 3 hours trying to figure this out.

Looking up both of those software titles....I see nowhere, where it says it needs java. Java, AFAIK is still an outdated and highly susceptible to exploits flash player for a browser.

    First, go here:
    https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
and verify java is installed and working.

I.e. separate the issues of java and optifine. If that test is ok, Java should be ok. The problem is then how you handle your applications.

Optifine is (apparently) distributed as a .jar file.
It does not appear straightforward. See below.

This: (which I found by searching for 'optifine java install') may give you another approach:

Once resolved, decide if you actually need Java installed.
