Guide to use Virtual Dub in windows 10 64 bit

I have earlier used Virtual Dub in XP and had also installed some codec packs which I now forgot. Can some one guide me step by step to use Virtual Dub in Windows 10 64 Bit. First I got error "could not locate decompressor for format h264". while loading AVI file. I downloaded and installed the XVID but then there was an error regarding audio. I selected "no audio". Now no error but video played only blank black screen.

I would appreciate a step by step guide and also the links if any thing has to be downloaded.

I have already tried this but it made only one difference that is that I do not get error " could not locate decoder for format H264" but video run as blank black without any picture. May be this method is for XP.

I have v 1.10.4 which works with a number of avi files on my disk. In some cases there are specific warnings about certain parameters. AVI is not a tightly defined format. Do you have any avi files that do play?

    This tool may help:

The two things: First whether videoinspector and mediainfo are same things.
Secondly, THe same AVI Files are playing in other programs in my PC like VLC, Any Video Converter etc., then why not playing in Virtualdub.

Hi, 1. no they aren't. 2. Programs are written by different authors and may use different CODECs.

I ran the videoinspector. It showed Intel ITU H.264 codec missing. I clicked on the download button. It took me to a page showing h.264 codec sites. I tried from Divx and it installed Divx Player. I thought now the required codec must have downloaded. I again ran videoinspector but it again showed same codec missing. Now what to do.

While searching on the net, I came across x264. I installed x264 and wow the video is now playing. No need for H.264.
Thanks for trying to help me.
