I'm a musician and I'm (also) using MIDI for music production. Problem is that in Win 10 not all MIDI files are playing back properly. F.x. I have some drum files that only play back piano notes where it was supposed to play back a whole drum kit. I read that MS somehow changed the MIDI protocol (or whatever it's called) starting from Win 8. Has anyone, anywhere got a fix? Regards...
Don't know if it is a 'fix' but I'd try opening the files in VLC, quite versatile.

I'll give it a try, thank you. Forgot to mention that the 'problem files' will play back correctly when imported into Cubase, my music project program, but it's a bit of a time consuming process...
VLC gives me this: Codec is not supported - VLC could not decode the format "MIDI" (MIDI audio)
According to VideoLAN - VLC - Features it should play MIDI files.
Plays all formats

After some surfing, I see a lot complaints about MS having scrapped the good old Midi Mapper Win 8 and onwards...
I haven't had any issue with the MIDI .mid files I have but they are not converted from any other format, as far as I know.
MIDI files contain note data, but no audio data. In order to play a MIDI file, the note data must be fed into a rendering engine. Windows used to include a (very crude) engine that handles that (but some, above, are saying it's not there anymore).
No matter. That engine was pure crap. You say you're a musician? Then get proper rendering software. Get a DAW and some software instruments to plug into it. You can get pianos, drums, strings, and many more instruments.
But this is a Windows forum, not a music forum. You'll find more and better information elsewhere. I'm a pianist, so I'm on at PianoWorld.com ... and there are many more fora for other musical specialties.
