I still use Office 97, because it still works, it's lightweight, very fast and portable, and networked, and my ancient license still is valid. There is nothing more I need except for the Office 2007 converter pack to read docx, xlsx, and so on. No automatic updates, except for the 2007 convertor. My documents are indistinguishable from those printed or converted to PDF from any more recent MS Office version.
Interesting, according to Microsoft Office site that file converter is supposed to only work with Office 2000 through 2003. I haven't tried Office 97 on Win10 yet, may have to on my Insider Preview computer. I do know Office 2000 works on Win10, at least for the basics.

The others are right, could be someone with an exact answer has not seen the question yet. After all, most of us are volunteers offering to help others whenever possible. Sometimes a response will come within a few hours or less or maybe a day or two, maybe longer.

It's not seamless with Excel, but the converter will open an xlsx file from File Explorer as an xls file in Excel 97. To convert to xlsx, I use Excel online from OneDrive.

Word document conversion is more comprehensive with the ability to save in 2007 format docx from the file save menu in Winword 97.

In all my systems running Excel 2013, the default is 8.43.

My MacBook Pro runs Microsoft Office 2011 and the default width in Excel is 10.0 (0.90 inches).

You see, Mariam, this is what happens when the elephant leaves the room, the people left behind just talk amongst themselves for a while, and then wander off too.

    Sigh.

I'm sorry, I've had a rough couple of days. Anyway, yes, I've installed the "fix" and what it did was it left the width at 8.43; in addition to that, I've also gone to Settings --> Update and Security --> Advanced Settings and I've ticked off "Update Microsoft products while downloading Windows 10 updates". So everything should be fine from now on (*knock on wood, fingers crossed*).
