Hello, have you researched this on the forum? Questions about this have been asked so often.. the forum is a useful resource tool.

Note that you cannot change defaults from within programs- true from Win 8 on.

    Please see:
Default Apps - Choose in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
Have you tried by these means?

Also note that there are special instructions about Chrome which you can find which many have had difficulties with.
    Search
    Chrome default browser
    e.g.

Note too that a couple of old version programs e.g. Winzip if installed have caused defaults to be reset on restart.

Hope that helps and points you in the right direction.

It seems to be a newly introduced problem in the 1607 update.

Hi, default program changes have been discussed throughout Win 10's life.. just wondering what you're seeing as a particular problem?
It's part of the learning curve - control of defaults via the OS is conceived as increasing security.

Perhaps only VLC player warns if you try to change the default from within the program. Maybe others will catch up or remove the option. (Ever seen a non-default browser ask you if you want to set it as default for example? Meaningless in Win 10- just confusing).

The problem I'm having is that changing the default app for .html files in Settings or with the file context menu doesn't work. Changing it in Control Panel does work. Prior to 1607, all three worked.

The "default app settings" from settings didnt work for me after update 1607.
My default browser can only be changed thru control panel.

    Ok, try this.
    Download and install FileTypesMan (free).
Run it, scroll down to html and check the entry matches with what you have in Settings, Choose default applications by file type.
    Leave it running.

Assuming it does, now change the browser allocated to html using Settings.

Now click once in FiletypesMan window to focus it, then f5 to refresh. Scroll down to HTML and see if your change is reflected there.
If not, it hasn't been written to your registry.

Are you running as a standard user or as admin?
