Windows Media Player Win10n - wont install

    Team
I'm running Win10n 64 bit, Home built PC running 16g Ram etc.

My machine updated to windows 10 without me saying a word a while back.. And prior to having a forced lobotomy and upgrading to Win 10 - I had Media Player and all was happy in the world and everything worked..

I am now missing Windows Media Player... I also cant install it. I need it for a Garmin Mapping program I use.

Thinking that the 500,000,000,000 hits on google from poor suffering people like myself with this issue, they all say this fixes it, I though yea this is too easy eh...

    So I've gone and installed
"The Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 10 will install Media Player and related technologies on a computer running Windows 10 N or Windows 10 KN editions.
For further information, please see http://support.microsoft.com and query the Knowledge Base for the article number KB3010081."
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-au/down....aspx?id=48231

But after the install which should installed Windows Media Player etc - it doesn't.
It appears to work fine - it appears to stall. But not everything installs.

Shutdown... wait few mins, reboot... and it will all work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    FAIL..............

When I go to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player folder, and compare with my other machine on the desk here, there are no files in the Windows Media Player root directory.

If I try and just copy from 1 machine to the other, then run either the setup_wm.exe or wmplayer.exe says this isn't installed, and sends me to a dead URL.. I've been going in circles for 3 hours now...

I want to smash who ever thought up the awesome improvements in windows 10 (which for the average user like myself are nil...) with a hammer.

Anyone got any ideas how I can fix this? I'd rather not reinstall Win7 as I have lots installed on this machine, and its just bulltish that you should need to... If I have to I will.. No fan of this Windows 10 garbage.

Wow! Five hundred billion hits, this Windows 10 must really be crap thinking that each and every of 7 billion people on earth have posted over 70 times about how Windows sucks!

This garbage, as 499,999,991,396 other of those Google hits you found about non-functioning Windows 10 is a typical user error caused by yourself, user not bothering to read details and instructions before downloading, installing or trying a feature.

Let's have a look of the wrong Media Feature Pack for Windows N Editions download page which I bet my shirt you used to download the pack:

    Windows Media Player Win10n - wont install-image.png
(Click to enlarge, read the highlighted part.)

The "garbage" as you put it is there clearly to see. You have downloaded wrong Media Feature Pack, KB3010081. That pack only works with Windows 10 prior to November 2015 update, the correct pack for Windows 10 version 1511 and later (build 10586 and later) being KB3099229. Link on that wrong outdated page takes you directly to correct download: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3099229

I think that in your case, to avoid again a wrong download, it is important to remind you that you should select the KB3099229_x64.msu file for your 64 bit Windows. The KB3099229_x86.msu is for 32 bit systems.

    Hi there

Not an answer to your post - but there are so many better Media players out there - for starters VLC which can handle almost every known codec on this planet (and probably other ones too !!).

For music the venerable WINAMP actually still works as well -- for Video playing though I can't see what's wrong with VLC. Plus it plays DVD's as well which I believe Windows media player doesn't do --at least not commercial ones.

Plenty of other choice out there too.

Why stick with a "Closed" WMV format also --type to change to FLAC / MP3/MP4/MKV etc. Nobody is developing WMV format any more.

    VideoLAN - VLC - Features

Can also convert WMV files as can Handbrake etc.

    Cheers

The OP had Windows 7 N edition. The N editions are alternative Windows editions for European Market and come without Windows Media Player, Windows Media Center and other media features. Users who want to make their Windows editions full editions can download and install a free Media Feature Pack for Windows N editions.

Currently there are five Media Feature packs available, according to Windows version: Media Feature packs for Windows 7 N, Windows 8 N, Windows 8.1 N, Windows 10 N RTM Build 10240, and Windows 10 N version 1511 or later. Media Feature Packs only work with the respective Windows versions; OP had Media Feature Pack for Windows 7 N which was removed when upgraded to Windows 10 N. OP then downloaded wrong one from two Media Feature Packs available for Windows 10 N.

That's about the story of this issue :)

Just stumbled upon the solution elsewhere, so I post it here, in case someone finds this topic.

Download Media Feature Pack for N versions of Windows 10 from Official Microsoft Download Center
