    Is Teamviewer a safe download?

I was thinking of installing Teamviewer at some point. Am not all that proficient with troubleshooting but I know enough to tick along and given that my family have so many computer issues that ask me to look at I figured something like this would be helpful. So I can maybe poke around on their machines without having to actually go over their houses to troubleshoot what are often minor, easily fixable things.

But I just wondered if Teamviewer is considered safe and whether it works ok on Windows 10? Do other people on this forum use it? I noticed there is the traditional desktop version that can be downloaded. But there is also a store / modern app version that is available. Normally I avoid store / modern app versions of traditional software like the plague because they are generally pretty lousy compared to the traditional variants. But I wonder if for simplicity the modern app version is any good and/or considered safe?

    Thanks,
    Wayne

Team viewer is the standard for remote support these days IMHO, used it for years and free for home use

You will need at least two parts to use the Teamviewer app or application the machines that you intend to support will need at least a small app to allow connection, (though I tend to use the full app as it allows me to work from any system in a group to fix any other )

create a free account with teamviewer to allow yourself to create a group or two to work with and you should be fine

Oh one other thing I would recommend is that you try things out with a fully working system once or twice before you have to work with a system that has problems, and check that all the systems work before they need to

There was a recent security scare. Make sure you use a strong password and recommend you set up two step authentication for your teamviewer account.

You can set it up for unattended access, but it is safer if you just tell your family to fire it up on demand, giving you the locally generated password. However this is a pain if you need to reboot remote pc.

So use a really strong remote password for unattended access eg 10 characters with numbers and symbols, lower and upper case e.g

No remote tool is totally secure of course.

Thank you. I will ensure for a strong password. Admittedly I think mostly we will just fire it up if needed.

I installed it. Will play about with it when I have more time. Got a bit confused as it gave several install options. I opted for basic as I don't think I'll be remote accessing my own PC. But say I wanted that feature at a later date. Do I need to uninstall and reinstall to utilise this feature or is this a simple preferences change within the software itself ?

IIRC The advanced options should allow you to add and change options as you need, if and when you need - I always install the full package as it allows me to access my system from anywhere even on my phone - useful to check how my backups are doing from the pub :)

Thank you, that sounds good the advanced options allow for those changes. I didn't fancy uninstalling and then re installing. I was trying to do it in a rush before my wife told me to get off the computer !!!!

Teamviewer is safe as long you download it from the official site and not 3rd party sites as they can modified the installer and install a hidden keylogger onto your system.
