Windows 10 won't allow me to reset file association!

I just finished doing an update to Windows 10 (a long one!) and of course Windows put all the file associations to its own cr@p apps, including for the PDF file. I wish to have this file associated with PDF-XChange, so I went to the Preferences in that app to do this - but Windows 10 gives the message "An app caused a problem with the default app settings for .pdf files, so it was reset to Microsoft Edge". So now not only does Micro$oft overwrite file associations, but it won't allow them to be set?

Hi, since Win 8, you can't set preferences from within a program. Very few programs warn of this or have been updated to reflect it.

You can set defaults in Settings, in the control panel, Defaults, and by using Open With to select a program provided you tick the box at the bottom to Always use this app.

I assume your Windows update was to 10586 - but that came out in November. That's the last one that had the effect of resetting associations.

See if one of the following methods will fix that.......................

    1. The old fashioned way:
Right click at Start > Control Panel > top right, click View by : > select either large or small > click Default programs > click Set your default programs > wait for loading > left side, scroll down to PDF-XChange > click it > right side, click set this program as default > click OK when done.

    2. Left click at Start > Settings > System > left side, Default apps > right side, scroll down near the bottom, click Choose default application by file type > left side, scroll down to pdf > right side, make sure it says PDF-XChange > if it says Microsoft Edge, click it and select PDF-XChange.

    3. Go to one of the pdf files saved in your computer > right click at it > click Open with > at the bottom, click Choose another app > use the scroll bar and locate PDF-XChange > click it > check the box " Always use this app to open pdf files > click OK when done.
If you don't have Open With on your right click context menu, use this tutorial to install :
Open with Context Menu - Add or Remove in Windows 10
