    Is TestDisk safe to use?

Wasn't sure where to put this. Anyway My sd card suddenly started saying it needed formatted. I have some family photos and stuff that I would like to recover. I found this:

TestDisk - Partition Recovery and File Undelete

But I am unsure how safe it is. Anyone know anything about it and how safe it is?

It should completely safe without any concerns over malware being an open source recovery app. Just how effective it will be for you however would have to be seen by giving it a try.

I think the next SD Card you use in any case you will need to remember to back things up since those are still in the removable media category and still a bit vulnerable to data loss. Hopefully you will still be able to recover them either by Test Disk or another app like Recuva. One CardRecoverPro utility claims to be good at recovering photos from SD and other types of memory cards seeing a $9 for 7 days option. Best SD Card Recovery Software - Since 2002 - CardRecoveryPro™

I used TestDisk + HDD Regenerator in the past, also for customers and had only positive experiences with both.

The MTDVD (latest was released 05-2014) has some good tools on it as well.

One more vote for TestDisk. Just follow instructions.

I tend to find that a good deal more of the open source apps tend to be more reliable then a good number of Windows apps I run into. They tend to be better written since there's no profit motivation in comparison to free trials and sharewares.

Tesk Disk has always seen good grades. In fact I just found I had previously downloaded it some time back quite some time before 10 arrived apparently to keep onhand despite the usual system images and other backups made.
