Just curious, are you using the Over Provisioning on your drives too? Do I really need to give it 190GB since that seems like a big amount.

Thanks Cliff S, I forgot but how large is your drive. Been reading around and it seems like the larger capacity, the higher the percentage used for OP, some even said to set 25% for OP... 500GB on a 2TB drive.

That's for older drives, I just set enough space for GC which is only for deleted waiting on trim stuff. Being my libraries are on my 2nd internal on my desktop, I do not need so much over provisioning. I do have a bit more on my laptop though.

Interesting, how does one figure out how much GC is needed since I thought GC is basically like a buffer so unless I am deleting and replacing 190GB's worth of data, I shouldn't need that high. I mean how often are the drives supposed to trim as the largest thing I ever replace or delete is really the Realtek HD Audio Drivers which is more like 1GB at the most.

You can either let windows run trim when it sees fit(usually about once a month, or if you feel like it you can run it in optimize drives.
automatic garbage collection "usually" takes place when you're system is on but not in use.
You could leave 20-50GB OP and be fine. Others might say more or less. I can always be adjusted later as long as the disk is not full. OP is just a way to make sure that you don't fill the disk to the point that GC can't take place.
Just like a spinner cannot defrag if the disk is too full, there must be enough room that files can be moved around.

Good info. What about if one doesn't do a OP/GC and in my case since I have 1.9TB anyways, would leaving the 20-50GB on the C: partition without doing the OP serve the same purpose since I wonder how it makes the drive last longer.

Just as long as you don't "fill" the disk up, you don't need it. It's just a reserved space to make sure there is enough room, not the actual place of trimming. It makes sense on 120GB disks and smaller, but a 2TB....meh!

I guess OP is really just reserving the space so you can't use it while without OP, one just needs to remember to not go over 90% capacity. As far as Samsung and OP, it seems like other brands of SSD has internal OP while Samsung allows the user to set the OP. It seems my boot up is faster before I installed Samsung Magician with the 10% OP and the Rapid Mode enabled for performance by about 5 seconds.
