I can't tell you Mike, I am not an expert in Macrium. But I did have quite a lengthy conversation with two experts over in 8 forums several months ago and that's what they told me.
Well, maybe because "empty" space doesn't have to mean that is all zeros, Even when a file is deleted data is still there but invisible to system. One good use for cloning is when you have to salvage data from a damaged drive. By cloning it to a healthy disk, all that data is transferred and there are better chances to salvage it with programs made for that. If you try to salvage it from original, damaged disk it may fail completely before it's finished because it has to work very hard during that process.
On the other hand, when you clone it, it stay as fragmented as it was on original, while restoring from backup its all contiguous except for reserved blocks.
All of that goes for any program for those purposes, not only MR.

Did you have the original and new disk in the system at the same time? I think clone and restore have some options on how to treat th MBR.
To clone, you must have both disks connected at same time while for restoring from backup only new one and of course a media where backup file is stored.

Why would empty space matter ? Only valid data is important.
Empty space doesn't matter to Macrium if you go with the default settings for clone, it will do an Intelligent Sector Copy, i.e., only those sectors in use get copied to the target.

You can, however, set it to do a Forensic Sector Copy which'll copy all sectors whether in use or not. They note in the options screen that ISC will be used regardless of your settings if the target partition is smaller than the source partition.

On top of that, if you've already cloned once and need to update your clone (due to changes on source drive), it will do a Rapid Delta Clone (if you haven't unchecked that box), only updating the sectors that need updating.

That makes sense, I normally keep MR at default settings making just changes to place to keep backups in. Yes, I made full backup of system disk immediately but my faith in MR has been somewhat shaken after last problem.
I am no stranger to reinstalling windows when necessary and don't keep any important data on system drive but would rather not do it if I can avoid it. Hundreds of programs and some with licenses so it may take couple of days to reinstall everything.

Hey, that works pretty well. I unlocked my Bitlocker encrypted drive, rebuilt the PE, and booted up to Macrium PE and sure enough the drive came up unlocked. You have to have the drive unlocked while building the PE environment or it won't work.

Ordered a pair of Samsung 850 pro 1TB SSD drives which should be arriving today to replace the pair of Western Digital 750GB 7200RPM 2.5" spinners that's been 24x7x365 for the past 4 years, thanks Cliff S for the suggestion on that and MR. In any case, I have a question about MR, will cloning clone the complete drive meaning will it clone the hidden recovery partition with it working when needed? I have cloned drives in the past but only up to Windows XP so there was no hidden recovery partition and used Norton Ghost as well as Acronis TrueImage.

Anyone here ever used Drive Snapshot?

Macrium sees all the partitions, even the hidden ones. So, if you tell it to clone the hidden ones as well, it will do it.
