Further information, submitted to add to the general confusion of both the known and unknown worlds:

Popups for .avi, .mid, and .mp3 extensions want to change from VLC to Media Player, yet when I click on those listings, the Media Player is not offered as a choice.

.CAB extension, which wants to change from WinRar to (? did not write down the change) is not even listed in the listing of extensions.

VLC player offers to change to Media Player, except there is no such entry (if my scribbled note is correct.)

I'd guess that having moved a lot of progs onto your new PC from Win 7 you might have sthg out of date or incompatible.
Hence my suggestion of a clean boot, should you need to investigate again.
For reference, another incantation you can use is Shellexview by Nirsoft, freeware. This lets you disable all shell extensions that might have side effects. (A great way of diagnosing rt click problems- and simplifying the context menu too if you wish).
    - hide all MS extensions
    - then disable all others

Recheck symptoms (no need to restart etc).

To check for out of date progs I recommend Sumo (lite version 'nork'). This is the most comprehensive updater I know. Free.
Sumo Lite installed and used. I did notice yesterday one or more out-of-date entries; have not had time to look into them. Other suggestions shall be followed eventually.

    Windows key + R, diskmgmt.msc
Using that program, reallocate the drive letter for your USB drive to a letter you'll never use.

Next time you plug in that drive, it will be allocated the same letter.
And of course that letter is the one Aomei uses.

Note- it's easy to recreate the backup but using a different drive letter as follows: delete it (specification, not the files!), then navigate to and explore the image (Utilities, Explore Image - as if you were going to mount it), the backup magically appears in Aomei again.
Done the easy way: Changed drive letter in GenieSoft; had to reinstall AOMEI, as it failed the transfer, so chose the new drive letter, I:\.

Latest Findings: Windows Media Player is not installed, but there are folders with it in both Program Files and Program Files (x86). Could that be the cause of the problem? Seems a bit odd that a non-installed program could cause the popups, but given that Windows is a bit odd, the world is more than a bit odd....

I tried to delete one of the folders, which gave me the Trusted Installer message; I don't remember what that is, and have not looked it up yet.

What about Player entries in the Registry, which I suppose are left over from my Windows 7, which did have the program installed; could those be culpable?

Hi, WMP is a bit puzzling.. I noted those two folders also, and this is a clean install of Win 10, so suggest you leave it well alone. That's how to remove/install it.

WMP is there.. but you may have to look further- More Options..
Or you could try using the control panel to uninstall it and reinstall it.

Mm, not shown in Control Panel, Default Apps, File association list if that's where you were looking..

Is this one MS is surreptitiously reserving for its own use?
Notwithstanding which, using Control Panel Default Apps to associate Winrar with all it can handle => .cab associated with Winrar (not restarted yet).

I'm seeing a few reports here of users with new PCs or very little installed with file association problems.
I don't suffer them (so far), but all is up to date.

    Normally one would expect:
    - Windows corruption - repair it.
    - Simple user error or assumption- do it another way
    - Interaction between some program conflicting with Windows (application, driver...)
    - Some peculiar setting problem
(then there are the less frequently occurring hardware problems)

But it is increasingly looking as though there's sthg intrinsic to the new model of Windows marketing and the universal apps implementation, and the way MS treats defaults that is misbehaving.

What is not at all clear is what the trigger for this is, as it only affects some users/PCs.

    Possible reg fix here:

See discussion here e.g. (not solved in general)

Thanks for link to Windows Features, where I turned off Windows Media Player. The only thing I used it for, and that very infrequently, was for ripping music from a CD. Perhaps the popups will now no longer pop up.

Thanks. I found and marked .cab in WinRar yesterday afternoon, and it stopped popping up, leaving only the three miscreant Windows Media Player ones.
