May I politely ask what it is you don't like about Skype.
yes of course. I don't like the fact that you have to have a webcam because if you don't the dang thing keeps rending you every time you log in and thus far I can't see any way of turning those reminders off. And I did have Skype on my system for about eight months s a trial period and I didn't like it because my family don't use it and I can't talk to them, I tried getting them onto it but they were having none of it so I deleted it! The only friends I COULD talk to on there were my FB friends because I linked my account and there are no other alternative IM apps out there that ANY of my family and friends use or are remotely interested in which is another reason why I think Microsoft need to seriously consider bringing Windows Live back and giving people the option... For a price of course, I would pay to use Windows Live Messenger if I had to!

I have skype and my webcam does not come on every time.
You must of had it set up wrong.
I have set mine up for chat only.
If I want to chat webcam then I set it up and then close it once I have finished.

I have never seen skype demand you have a web camera. I have used it on numerous machines without a camera and I've never seen it once do that.

Same here never been asked to turn on camera, or if I had one
OP has to have done something wrong or set it up wrong.

This is one of the main reasons I question people who say they hate this, or don't like that. Frequently (not always, but frequently) it's because they tried something once, and had some problem and they assume that's the way it always is, and never try it again... even though the (whatever it is) may evolve and change over time... they are still suck in whatever pattern they were in and refuse to look at it.

Or, they had a fundamental misunderstanding about something, or how to use that something, and thus made assumptions which aren't accurate.

Regardless, it's often beneficial to get them to talk about it... in that way we're often like psychologists.. lol

Some people get upset at this... some people get upset because of questions to others... Dag nabbit, aren't they entitled to their opinion? They ask... Yes, they are, but that doesn't mean their opinion is always well founded (again, not always... sometimes).

I use Skype all the time without a web cam. But, you are saying it's Microsoft's fault because none of your chat partners want to try Skype or another chat client? That can't be blamed on Microsoft.
