    Hi dalchina

I had a lot of apps (jpg, movies, photos, pdf, music reverting back to Microsoft apps after new update Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB3213986) and everything has worked fine before that and i am running as admin and they reverted back to Microsoft almost straight away after i changed them, no reboot or anything they just changed as i carried on working.

I tried changing them back again with "open with" but that did not work for more than a few minutes so i tried your suggestion and went through the control panel and changed them with the default programs and so far so good they have stayed as i want them.

    Thanks for the tip.

Thanks- glad you've sorted it out. Frustrating experience.. not one everyone has fortunately; MS seems to be keen to bias people towards its choice. It's interesting some users are beginning to view universal apps and the Store as the only options.. whilst I can understand the support provided in restoring these and providing 'clean' programs, new users to Windows may lose the concept of installing desktop programs.

This may be of interest in saving your defaults- although there should be no need normally to use it.

post no 11 says he used the Control Panel, default programs, to set his default programs. (Which should have the same result as doing it in Settings). You cannot set program defaults from within a program. A long time back some found using an old version of Winzip (and one other program) meant this happened. They had to update that program. There might be others.

Have exactly the same issue, only started happening recently after a recent update, Windows in the lower left of the screen keep popping up saying the default for such and such a program has been reset to default, doesn’t stay there very long......very annoying

That might be because of your current activation problem.

There are lots of people on several forums with the same issue, there is even an app to prevent it for certain programs, so not sure if it has to do with activation issues.......
