Programs and Apps in W10 don't launch

I've been reluctant to upgrade to W10 because of fear that things already installed will not work. I took the plunge and upgraded W7-pro on my ACER laptop and my fears are true. No previously installed programs installed in W7 launch when I click the link in the Start Menu, including Office.

Additionally, when I click on links to system items, like services or event viewer or run or anything, I get the following message: "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action..."

On the taskbar there's File Explorer, Firefox, Chrome and an email client. None of the links work when I single or double click on them. NOTHING in the start menu --> all Apps work. I click, nothing happens, not even a message. If I double click the executable in File Explorer, the program runs.

I've run SFC, created a new admin user, tried a clean boot, even reinstalled Office as a test, nothing is working, no change to the functionality. According to W10, all updates are installed.

I'm glad I didn't upgrade, or break, my main PCs by installing W10.

How can these issues be resolved???

I don't have a solution to your issues, except that perhaps you won't mind reverting back to Windows 7 Pro if you have exhausted your search for a solution.
It can be done PROVIDED ......
    1. You installed Win 10 LESS than 30 days ago.
    2. You have NOT deleted the windows.old from the system.

Left click at Start button > left side, select Settings > select Update & Security > left side, select Recovery > right side, under Go back to Windows 7, click the Get Started button.

Use the link below to download the current version of Windows 10 and save the ISO file to your computer.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

    3 suggestions :
    1. Go to the ISO file > right click at it > click Setup.exe.
That will start the in-place upgrade. You can keep your files, settings and apps (most of them).
    No product key is required.
    Activation will be automatic.

    2. Burn the ISO to a bootable media ( DVD or USB ) > set your boot order to CD/DVD or USB depending on which media you will be using > insert the bootable media > Restart > when it comes to Install Now or Repair, select Repair option.

    3. Use the bootable media and do a Clean Install.

Thank you. I will try suggestion 1. If I end up doing suggestion 2 or 3, will it automatically do activation like you mentioned in suggestion 1? It's downloading now.

    Thanks!

#2 ....... yes. Activation is automatic because you already had it activated before.
#3. ...... you might be asked for a product key. If so, click the option SKIP and continue. Activation will be automatic because you already have it activated before Clean Install.

Hi. I did #1, and nothing has changed. I tried #2, and under repair there's nothing that appears to repair other than to blow away what's installed and start over with a clean install (the shotgun method). I'm avoiding #3 at this time because I don't want to lose my installed apps. Ideas? Thank you.

Additionally, I right click the desktop, New, Shortcut and browse to a working executable file (chrome.exe) and created the desktop shortcut. When I double clicked on the new valid desktop shortcut, nothing happens. UGH!
