My apologies for bumping an older thread, sirs.

I have a question, perhaps more a curiosity.

I have used CCleaner for years, with never a problem.

Currently using 'Portable Version 5.79.8704 (64 Bit)'.

Do any of you that use it, ever utilize the 'Free Space' cleaner?

I have in the past, used it on occasion, but it has been a long time. Back story, I have nothing on my PC that I would be concerned of anyone seeing. So, not attempting to cover anything.

Should I run it (takes hours for a simple pass), or, should I not even bother with it?

I appreciate any, reply/advice, or otherwise.

    Thank you.
I've never seen any point unless you have private information you need to fully erase. Word of warning don't use it on an SSD.

Generally, that Free Space wiper is intended to be used if your are getting rid of the machine and want to "sanitize" it. Keep in mind on an SSD it does a bazillion writes, and God forbid you do multiple passes. The cells will never forgive you!

Bottom line...... everyday user and use., leave it alone.

Perfect! Thank you for the rapid reply, TC.

I appreciate the information, my friend.

I will give it no further thought.

Yes, I do, but only for one very particular purpose.

I never 'sanitize' my HDDs with it, and in any case writing zeros to every unused sector of an SSD would be bad for its health/endurance.

But I do use Alex Page's USB Image Tool to back up some of my USB sticks. As this includes every sector of the USB in the image I like to I zero all the free space before making the image file. This makes it as compressible as possible for storing in an NTFS compressed folder, or in a .zip file. That's the one an only time I use this feature, but it works and does 'what it says on the tin'.

Now you can do that with Macrium V8. The stick backup.

That is true, and with Reflect's 'intelligent sector copy' the unused sectors don't get included in the image so there's no need to zero them. But until now it has been a necessary space saving exercise.

Alex Page's USB Image Tool still has some advantages. It is a tiny portable app that needs no install, and its .img files can be opened in 7-Zip File Manager. I may continue to use it along side Reflect.
