    That is mighty odd, maybe some system files are corrupt. You can try running this in an admin command prompt, let it run through and then reboot. Then see how things look after:

    fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\&fsutil usn deletejournal /d /n c:&Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup&&sfc /scannow&Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth&sfc /scannow&Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase&pause

    operation completed successfully.....now rebooting

    seems to be staying as it should be with date installed....and guess what ? programs I installed before and new ones installed just now are showing up as new installed programs, also are in the program menu and can be pinned to the start menu, so your suggestion seems to have worked......just hope it says this way, do you have any idea what could have caused this ? if stable for a week or so will back a true image backup...
    thanks so much for your help, support and patience.

    as a matter of curiosity do you know which part of the ' sequence ' you gave me resolved the issue. also would like to know what I did to get into that situation, to avoid it again and lastly, could you put that sequence in a batch file ? would be handy to keep with my Arsenal of repair utilities.

    thanks again

    First of all here is the batch file with a shortcut that runs it as admin(elevated):

    ClassicMaint.zip

    As to which part resolved the issue, I have no idea. I use this batch to repair(or at least try to) the system when anything isn't working as it should. If a file is corrupted or missing Windows can either find a copy on the system, or if need be, download it from Microsofts servers.

    I guess some kind of corruption caused it, either a .dll or more likely in the WinSxS folder.
