could be my fault when I created the shortcut I removed the .exe have now added this back and have copied both shortcuts to the program folder but still not showing up in start menu.....do I need to nest the shortcuts in a folder in the program folder ?

You created a shortcut yourself to desktop first and used that, right? I mean you didn't place the .exe in there(laugh I've done it:))?

I really can't say, sorry, It's worked for me on the few portable apps I use and on a couple installed(that only have desktop shortcuts) too.

Actually not. I just did one for a batch file I have with a shortcut that runs elevated. here are the steps I did.
First I created my shortcut to the desktop
installed program not showing in start menu-image-001.png

Then I placed it in the start menu/programs folder
installed program not showing in start menu-image-002.png

Then it appears as New in All Apps, Which I right click and pin to Start Menu.
installed program not showing in start menu-image-003.png

    There it is.

just downloaded a small program called speccy and it's not in the programs list and right clicking does not pin it to start menu, but can pin to task bar.....almost looks like the pin to start menu is ghosted, doesn't seem as dark.....do I have a problem ?

    thanks
