Just used your excellent rescue media two days ago to recover a system that was scammed and locked with a SysKey password. Owner was locked out completely, and I managed to defeat the scammers. Thanks for this great tool! :)
Be nice to know how you did it so we can all learn .

super work Kyhi... I just registered to say thank you for the wonderful work. I did not have the recovery disk for windows 10. Your bootable disk worked like a charm and i was able to retrieve my Os without having to reinstall. It would have resulted in spending my entire weekend just to do a clean install and setting up all my apps. You have saved me some serious headache.

If you happen to come to my part of the world (India), I would like to cordially invite you to a lunch. Super thumbs up... :)

I used Rufus to install on USB stick.
    Works nicely!
    Thanks!

Can a repair or reinstall be used using this, if one can't
    boot directly to the OS?

you can reinstall by running setup.exe on the install media after booting into PESE...

Or you would have to manually attempt the repair yourself...

there was a post about it a page or three back...

also as comment in first post..

Damn, one drive isn't letting anyone download this anymore, it says:
"This item can't be opened right now, the person sharing it has exceeded their sharing limit. Please try again later"

Has anyone got a 64 bit copy of the windows 10 copy of this that I could download? I've been trying to fix my boot recovery since Sunday night and it's driving me up the wall.

Kyhi: I'm trying to use your Image_Health utility to do an sfc repair and I've run into a roadblock.

(I should mention I'm doing this in Win8.1, so if this is the wrong forum for posting this, I'm also a member of the Win8 forums -- just tell me where to post this there.)

I ran the scanhealth and the restorehealth. The second failed because it needed the source files, so I pointed it to an old install.wim file I had saved. It mounted the file OK but when it ran, it failed saying that files are mssing.

So, I had downloaded a Win8.1 ISO file from MS a while back. I opened it and dragged the install.esd file onto decrypt.cmd. It errored out saying: Specific file is not original ESD file. the complete file would contain 4 images.

So, I downloaded a new copy of the mediacreationtool, ran it, saved the resulting ISO file. Then, I opened the ISO file, dragged the install.esd file from that onto decryptcmd -- and it gave me the same error message.

Since I did an in-place upgrade to Win8.1, I do not have an original MS disk.

If the ISO downloaded from MS will not work, how do I go about getting an install.wim file that WILL work?

    Mark,
First let me say not all the files are in the install.wim - many come from windows updates..
that why we run restorehealth (option 2) first..

The install.esd in the ISO is not the proper type ESD for the decrypt.cmd

And the Media creation tool is the only method of getting MS Windows 8.1 Media...
And it contains an install.esd.... But there is a work around using the Products.xml and decrypt.cmd

Mount the ISO and image health will find the install.esd
then you can export it into a source folder created within the image health directory (option 2)

    echo. Press 1 - Use the Source Install.esd as Repair Source ^( soure:esd: ^)
    echo. Press 2 - Export Install.esd to Install.wim Repair Source ^( source:wim: ^)
echo. Press 3 - Mount the Windows Image as the Repair Source ^( Recommended ^)

    Kyhi:

Sorry, but don't understand what to do regarding the workaround.

My first pass at this, I attempted to use an old install.wim file and DISM failed with 0x800f081f -- the source files could not be found.

So, I tried a second pass using an install.esd file which I exported from the ISO I downloaded using the MCT, and it errored out as well.

Then, a forum member lat night PM'd me with instructions on using MS Tech Bench to obtain an Win8.1 ISO, I downloaded that, exported the contained install.wim file to a directory, reran DSM option 3. It found the file, mounted it, but again, errored out with the 0x800081f The source files could not be found.

The folders I am using are:
    1) C:\IMAGE_HEALTH -- cmd file, tmp folder containing the mounted install.wim file
    2) E:\Sources -- folder containing the exported install.wim file (from the ISO)

I looked at the DSM log, and it has the following error messages:

    2016-05-26 11:01:04, Error DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=6452 TID=4884 Failed finalizing changes. - CDISMPackageManager::Internal_Finalize(hr:0x800f081f)
2016-05-26 11:01:04, Error DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=6452 TID=4884 The source files could not be found; their location must be specified using the /source option to restore the feature. - GetCbsErrorMsg
2016-05-26 11:01:04, Error DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=6452 TID=4884 Failed processing package changes with session option CbsSessionOptionRepairStoreCorruption - CDISMPackageManager::RestoreHealth(hr:0x800f081f)
2016-05-26 11:01:04, Error DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=6452 TID=4884 The source files could not be found; their location must be specified using the /source option to restore the feature. - GetCbsErrorMsg
2016-05-26 11:01:04, Error DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=6452 TID=4884 Failed to restore the image health. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ProcessCmdLine_CleanupImage(hr:0x800f081f)
    2016-05-26 11:01:04, Error DISM DISM Package Manager: PID=6452 TID=4884 Failed while processing command cleanup-image. - CPackageManagerCLIHandler::ExecuteCmdLine(hr:0x800f081f)
So, I'm at a loss regarding what to do now. Maybe a Repair-Install would fix this -- using the Win8.1 ISO?
