Whoa!! what a great site and for a very average user like me a real plus. The only bit I didn't get was re the time life of the OS being forever for 7 and 8 but not for 10?? or have I got hold of the wrong end of the stick??

I am wondering because I bought an OEM copy of 10 Pro (because I am NOT a fan of upgrades) and if as I am reading that I shall have to pay more for the system later??

    Thanx ... :)

Just a correction to this paragraph:

As such, the product key for your existing installation – Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 – is “absorbed” during the upgrade process. That doesn’t mean it no longer exists, rather, it has been marked in the big Microsoft Windows 10 upgrade database as used. If you reinstall Windows 10, Microsoft will recognize your system hardware and validate the installation, provided you’re not violating the rules of the licensing agreement
The Win7/8 key is only used locally to create the Genuine ticket - with which digital entitlement is provided - within the GT there is the hardware ID, the edition and version from which the upgrade took place and a flag indicating it's genuine. The key does not get absorbed (or sent to MS) at all (if so Win 7 OEM keys which are generic would all get blocked)

No, bud - you are good togo...Win 10 retail activation is no different from previous ...and digital licences are perpetual on current hardware .

Actually just read that article and it is actually not that accurate on digital licences. It is already well known you can transfer a digital licence from one device to another EVEN if original was EULA (ok violates EULA).

They say categorically it cannot be done which just says to me they have not actually tried it. I am not advocating you should do it but just stating facts.

Also, unless I missed it, they do not say you can only transfer it a few times etc.

I think the article makes assumptions and does not probe real limits of digital licences.

Who knows if you had 10 home and then installed 10 Pro as dual boot, you can only link last install to MSA (although both will have a digital licence)

Who knows, if you change from MSA to local account, link to MSA gets removed etc.

Who knows if you use slmgr / upk to remove a windows 10 licence, it does not affect the digital licence (and since 1607 all installs get a digital licence - not well know either).

To me, this article shows it is written by someone who has not actually tried testing digital licence limitations.

    Good points.
Makes we wonder: All my systems use a local admin account. If I make a second account with my MS credentials, to get the system linked to my MS account, and then delete that MS user account from the computer, is my system still linked to my MS account for future activation issues? I suppose I should give it a try...

Nah - doesn't work. Link gets deleted if you remove MS account.

What does work is to link digital licence from local account which basically logs you in with MS account thereafter.

Then create a NEW local account and login in with that but keeping MS account even if you do not use it.

Oh thanks - saved me some fiddling. So I would need to have an MS User account on the system and just leave it there for it to be registered. I don't want to switch all my local admin accounts to MS accounts - all my user files would be in that account then. What a PITA.

You could try setting up a second local account first, booting to that and going to activation troubleshooter to link licence. I have not tested it but I think that would work.
