So I can use the saved key if I need to re-install? Thanks for this tip.
If you did the free upgrade to Windows 10 and have a digital entitlement you don't need the key. It will be a generic key anyway. Google the last 5 characters of the key and you'll likely see what I mean. With a digital entitlement you just click skip when asked for a key on a clean install. If 10 came pre installed by the OEM the key will be embedded in the BIOS and read automatically by the install media.

Go to Settings > Update $ Security > Activation, then see what it says for Product key. It likely says this device is activated with a digital entitlement and doesn't list the key at all. If that's what it says, you don't need the key. You just have to be sure to install the same version you got with the free upgrade when you do the clean install.

What happens if you change the hardware like new mobo and processor? Can you use the saved key then? Do you have to go back through the win 7 upgrade process again? It's not a big deal either way, but if I can legally save 200 bucks on win 10 pro. I will.

I've been thinking about upgrading, but i need to wait a bit. There's a bunch of new tech coming out around same time. DDR4, h.265/VP9 hardware decoding, and so on. I wanted to wait until all the next gen features I want are out. I typically custom build, but I upgrade mobo, cpu, and ram at one time. The rest upgrades whenever.

The problem is that I think all these features wont be out in a solid support format until after next July. So I was wondering if this key would carry over then or just prior. I've been using the same win 7 key since 2010. Through 2 pc upgrades on the cpu/mobo. I've had the same case and other components since 2007. One of the HDD goes back to 2004.

If you have a Retail Key - you can transfer to New MOBO - via phone activation...
If you have a OEM Key or It is after the 1 Year Free deal..
You may be required to purchase a new key along with the New MOBO

I have the digital river upgrade to win 7 pro. I got it as a student. I'm not sure if it's OEM or not. So the process goes like this.

    Win XP > Win 7 > Win 10 or Win 7 ignore activation > Win 7 again > Win 10.

If I try to download the win 7 iso today it tries to give me the french version or something. So I've hung on to the digital river ISO for dear life.

Just try windows 10 with your windows 7 product key
If the PC has already had a windows 10 installations - you do not even need to windows 7 key - you can just choose skip - but a new mobo would not have receive windows 10 yet..

If you have Retail Purchase Key ( you do) - you can transfer to new mobo..
Install 10 with 7 key and phone activate... But free upgrade only good within 1 year...
So depending on time you may need to purchase windows 10 key

If you did the free upgrade the key is a generic key. Everybody that did the free upgrade got the same key. There is a Pro key and a Home key. Those keys are useless for trying to transfer your license. The free upgrade is free for the life of the device. Those keys will only activate if the PC has a digital entitlement. OEM embedded keys are non transferable too. You could do it with a full retail key though.

Can somebody explain how showkeyplus extracts my retail windows 7 correctly, from an upgrade to windows 10 even though I removed windows.old a long time ago using disk cleanup. I thought this was not possible?
