Craig I ma bit confused nothing unusual about that I suppose but I just checked the key and if I ma not terribly mistaken is what is it the pic the original upgrade key because that is what I did from 7. I was under the impression that once upgraded they gave you a different key.
Of course I am not really that savvy with this stuff and am on version 1703.

I ask because if I ever want to reinstall from an ISO because I would like to clone this drive to a larger drive but it will not let me and so is this key going to work??

That is the standard product key that every upgrade to Windows 10 Pro gets:
    VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T

    What matters is this page:

Windows is activated with a digital license saved on Microsoft Activation Servers with the unique hardware ID of the computer. Skip entering a product key when reinstalling Windows and it will retrieve the digital license from Microsoft Activation Servers and activate itself.

Yip John, (@ICIT2LOL) as John (@NavyLCDR) says...

The key becomes irrelevant after an updrade to a digital licence.

Eg. I upgraded my work notebook (from 1511 to 1607) that has a Win 10 Pro OEM key but was activated with a Win 10 MAK key and got digital licence on that install (and displays a generic MAK key now).

Interestingly, however, a second partition with a clean install of 1703 shows the activation with the OEM key (i.e. without a digital licence)

I guess the advantage to that is-> you don't have to go digging through your "junk" drawer in your desk(or hundreds of folders in Documents folder), looking for the slip of paper, with the key, before every clean install

Sorry for the confusion have had a forgettable fortnight with my main machine (7) and am still not sure if I have got it fixed.

Hence my headspin I did try t clone the drive on that machine with10 to a lager one but it just would not have a bar of it so thought my only recourse was t reinstall onto a larger drive and went looking for a key. So I am assuming I just use that one I have if I do that because of the wretched time I have had with the main machine I just would like to know that things would go off smoothly and not end up with two disasters

I think 1703 is correct behaviour - I understood digital licences only applied to normal domestic keys. However, aleays an exception to the rule .

This was trail blazed by MS at outset of Windows 10 as a feature.

Interestingly this only applied to upgrades and windows 10 keys bought from MS Store in 1507 and 1511. Also of course, preinstalled oem W10 had bios embedded keys in most cases, and these would also activate automatically.

With advent of 1607, ALL installs get granted a digital licence. So once activated, you can install it again on same pc without ever again.
