    Update on Norton's 5/27/16

Norton has fixed this issue with dm_log_collector.exe and it HAS been added to their Safe File List !!!! This issue is now solved and the case is Closed. Whew ......its been a long day .... But I can Finally report this issue is FIXED!!

If anyone still has a problem with downloading dm_log_collector.exe being removed from your computer, Its a problem with your older definitions files in your Norton's, Conflicting with the NEW Updated definitions files. If this is the case, then the solution is to do a clean install of your Norton's and the issue will be fixed. ( Most people will NOT have to do a clean install, only those that have downloaded the file BEFORE two weeks ago.)

Hope this solves the problem for any future downloads of dm_log_collector.exe .
    Mike.
    Great job, Mike.

7 and 10 on various machines
       29 May 2016 #394

Look I haven't read the whole thread and what I have read really is debating things I don't really understnd.

Now I clean installed 10 from the free downloaded ISO (DVD) to make my old Toshiba with it's original 7 Pro into a 10 machine and I was under the impression that the original COA would then become the activation code for one or the other after 29th July. Hence me installing 10 before that date. Now I ran Showkey and it has come up with a very different number/code than the original 7 pro install.

So my queries are will the Showkey become the new activation code or will it be reverted back to the 7 Pro code after said date, and will 10 remain the only system that can be activated on this laptop?? ie I would have to buy another copy of 7 Pro (OEM) to have that on a another drive - if I should wish to use 7 again on this machine??

the key that is being shown as installed key - is the generic key for windows 10 pro...

if you look at the windows activation - you will see there is no key shown - just digital entitlement...

if you where to reinstall the oem version of windows 7 - it would use and activate the windows 7 marker..

now that the PC has digitial entitlement - you can reinstall windows 10 for the life of the pc...
weather you install older software again or not..

Now does this mean that this install is no good?? as it has taken the best part of a day to set up from scratch using the downloaded ISO and adding programs I use a lot. I hope not because I don't intend installing the 7 back onto this machine and why I thought because the upgrade I did some time ago would "acquire" the 7 Pro activation code for 10 after the 29th July.

I am probably missing something here but I don't know what as the goalposts seem to have been moved in a few ways since I first tried 10. If I do have it wrong then I have no idea as to what it is and I am confused now as to how the 10 will be activated?

Every copy of windows 10 uses the same generic key on the actual system and the Digital entitlement which is held on Microsoft's servers and Tied, (in some way only Microsoft knows, for security purposes), to the system hardware, so as Showkey shows the presence of the generic Key and the digital entitlement then the install is activated and good to go.

You also have the original OEM Seven key "baked in" for use if you ever decide to revert using the original OEM disks/ restore

The only real changes to the Windows 10 installation system is the possibility to perform a fresh install using a valid key rather than the original need to upgrade a running activated system, the way the Digital Entitlement works has not changed, ( but perhaps is better understood than it was )

If you wish to run a dual boot system Win7 / Win 10 on this system then you will need another key for windows 7 as the original key has been replaced by the Digital Entitlement - you can remove Win 10 and use the original "baked in" key to install the OEM recovery version of win7 or you can run Win 10 using the Digital entitlement but you cannot have both at the same time. you can uninstall and re-install either as long as the other is not in use

Thanks Nigel - I am intending to stay with 10 on this machine as I have 7 on the other machines and probably will even put 10 on the desktop I upgraded before to 10.

I haven't done anything with 10 for a long time because I had concerns re the system privacy stuff and the GUI of 10 but I can see it is quite a bit different to when I tried it back then and easier to configure even without using the Classic Shell software.

Also I did try dual booting before with 7 and 8 & 10 and to be honest could not see any advantage and as I have access to several machines I would sooner keep them as dedicated to the system on each one.

Thanks again for the heads up.

Go to Settings > Updates & Security > Activation > Product Key. It should state its activated with a Digital Entitlement. PC's activated with a digital entitlement all get the same generic keys. Showkey shows OEM Marker instead of a key because Windows 7 doesn't store a key in the BIOS. The key is only ever stored in the current install. Windows 7 is gone now so there is no Windows 7 key for showkey to find. There is an OEM identifier stored in the BIOS for use with reinstalling the original factory OEM install. That's what the OEM marker present in firmware means. Its in the BIOS and not erased by a reinstall of the OS. Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 store an actual key in the firmware, Windows 7 and earlier don't.

EDIT: Had to fix a big typo I made. It should have been "and not erased by a reinstall". Somehow I left out the not.

    Hey guys,

Just run showkeyplus and I get a key marked

    Windows 7 Home Premium oem:nons

I think that means it is not an slp key but could mean it is not a system builder licence key?

    Does anybody know?
