I got the same info about Win7 on a Dell Latitude Renew/Refurbish machine that I bought [$149] with Win10 installed.
Well I have 2 Dells here. One came with Windows 10 "factory installed" and that showed the keys OK. A few weeks ago I picked up an old Dell at a garage sale for $20. It came with Windows 7 Pro as there was a Windows 7 Key label on it but someone had installed Windows 7 Home on there. I reinstalled Windows 7 Pro with that key on the case and that activated OK. A week or so later I upgraded it to Windows 10 Pro which installed and activated fine, but that is the only key that ShowKeyPlus shows. I'm not sure if the original 7 Pro key is lost in the abyss as I had it replace everything on the drive, didn't save anything or ??? All it says for the OEM key is "Windows 7 OEM marker present in firmware"

Also noticed another interesting thing. ShowKeyPlus 1.0.7060 shows the OS Version as 18362.535 but according to the system info it is actually 18363.535. It does this on both machines

The Win 7 key should show up under Original key - Win 7 produced PC's does not have keys in the firmware

Has the Windows.old been retained on the upgrade?

MS came up with a "pseudo" build in 18363 - this will display properly in ShowKeyPlus Preview version.

This is new... in build 18363 the original key has been moved to the following reg key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Source OS

I will need to update ShowKeyPlus to get the info from there.

@bigdog @Berton You are correct - the upgrade from Win 7 does not display the original key due to this change

Why does MS not let me know about these things! sigh!

I just had a browse of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\Source OS on my system Craig.
There are 41 separate entries covering every Windows build update.

Well it seems it may indeed have changed

I installed 19041 Home and got a Win 10 Home OEM generic using a Win 8 OEM NonSLP (System builder) key

It has the Home OEM generic key (see here Generic Product Keys to Install Windows 10 Editions)

    Attachment 260998

So it appears from18985.1 onward the OEM generic is used.
What happens if that same machine gets a clean install of Windows 10 Home and skip entering the product key? I'll bet it flips to the generic retail channel.

Thanx Doogs - it's going to be a headache covering every single one... will need some sort of scrollable textbox or similar?

I have uploaded an updated Preview:

    Update: 32-bit Version / 64-bit Version 1.1.13.38600
    - Updated Original key retrieval

Most likely - the key that gets installed is related to the channel of the key being entered for activation - I'm not certain if the existing digital licence channel type will be updated from the activation server on skipping as the default install key will be retail - l'll have to test that.

Just downloaded 1.1.13.38662 and it did show the old Windows 7 Pro key so that is working good now.

What does the "Retrieve Key" function do? I know the Save saves the info in the dialog to a text file but not sure what the Retrieve Key is supposed to do. It appears to be looking for a file called SOFTWARE.

    Thanks

It allows you to retrieve the key from another system, not the one you are running. It can be on another hard drive but doesn't need to be a running system (or even functional). You look for its registry hive, a file called SOFTWARE, usually found in \Windows\System32\Config. Open this and you can retrieve its key.

I decided to add an Upgrades button to cycle through the upgrades rather than check each one for an Original key

    ShowKeyPlus-capture.png

It works much the same as "More" does - cycling through installations (this being online)

I'm not sure how much value it brings as the changes by MS regarding this registry change is more geared at Insiders that upgrade often and are build version changes moreso than product key per se.

@Bree can you test thread excecution please ( just rapidly click on different buttons (as in before the excecution completes) in succession and see if it falls over.
@DooGie, please see if all your 41 upgrades gets displayed correctly.

    Update: 32-bit Version 1.1.13.40415

    • Added Upgrade button to iterate upgrades

That seems perfect up to now Craig. SKP actually shows 42 upgrades all of which are correct . Guess I can only count up to 41 LOL.
The only thing that threw me a bit was this line. * Default key - requires a Digital License for activation.
It reads like the windows installation wasn't activated, however it was. Came from when I upgraded Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10 Home.
