    Nested Program Files

    Hi,

For some reason I have C:\Program Files\Program Files. Is this correct? Or is the nested one possibly from a merge of my old laptop? My hard drive is small and I’d like to optimize by moving everything in the nested up a level and removing and full blown duplicates (not intentional or required). I have the same for Program Files (x86)

It's not normal, I've not seen it happen and could have been a merge but I'd first check the C:\Program Files\Program Files sub-folder to see if things are the same as in C:\Program Files. If they are the same could delete the duplicates. The risk would be in some programs may not run so write down which don't and reinstall.

Thank you. Same deal for Windows?

You have Windows folder inside the Windows folder? That could be a major problem requiring a clean install of Windows but could try deleting the duplicate folder but risky.

Right click on <Start> and select <RUN> and type

    %ProgramFiles%

    What do you get?

    The same with

    %ProgramFiles(x86)%

You could try to rename the sub-folder temporaryly and check your programs before you delete anything.

    type:
    C:\Windows\System32>cd %ProgramFiles%

    C:\Program Files>dir

I’m just going to attempt to merge everything in to the main folder whilst maintaining the subfolders. It’ll alert me to any duplicates and I’ll be done.

Have you yet compared the dates of the files?
It might well be the case that the contents of
    C:\Program Files\Program Files
are older copies of files [from your 'merge'] and can just be deleted.
And the same with C:\Program Files(x86)\Program Files (x86)

Whatever you do, make a new system image before starting.

    Best of luck,
    Denis
