    Anyone using Notepad++

    It's been a long time since I udapte the program(I was using 8.2)and I just update to the latest and now my problems started
    The program is located into Program FIles( in a folder called Tools(where I keep some of my programs)as always and I am using it in portable mode)
    I never run the program as admin and I never had problems before
    Now that I update,when I run the program and close it,I get all kind of errors about access denied which I did not had before and as I said,the program was never running as admin before

    If I run it as admin,I cannot drag-drop files from for exaple the explorer because windows don't allow dropping files from non admin apps to apps that have admin access

    So we are clear...

    1. Are you using Notepad++ portable or Notepad++ mini-portable?
    2. Are you using a latest v8.6.4 release?
    3. Are you using a 64-bit or 32-bit version?
    4. Is the account you are using a standard user or one that's a member of the Administrator's group?

    1.Portable with all of the extras
    2.Yes lastest release
    3.The 64-bit
    4.Admin account(I am the only one using the laptop...Win10 Home with the latest updates)

    Never had this problem with Notepad++ before and I have been using the program since version 6,always in portable mode and always from the same folder it is now)

    Thanks for the additional info.

    Just to reassure yourself that it's an issue solely with Notepad++, create a new folder, e.g. C:\Temp, copy the Notepad++ portable folder to it then run it from there.

    Do you see the same errors when you close Notepad++ from the new folder?

    Yes,there is no errors as expected but if I switch back to 8.2,I have no problems keeping Notepad++ where it is now(Program FIles\Tools\Notepad)

    I have no idea why that happens
    I have decided to move it into another drive
    Thanks anyway

    You would need to use something like Process Monitor (filtered on notepad++.exe) to determine exactly what is causing the exit errors with v8.6.4.

    I suspect the error is because Notepad++ v8.6.4 cannot save its session file - session.xml... because Program Files is a protected location which requires elevation, even if you are using a user account in the Administrators group.

    To see what I mean, navigate to your C:\Program Files\Notepad folder then right-click on a blank area and choose New from the context menu. You won't see the usual filetypes available, only Folder (with a shield showing UAC protection)... 'cos Windows wont allow un-elevated file creation natively.

    IMO, with portable apps it's best to use a location like C:\Tools (e.g. C:\Tools\Notepad++) and avoid the elevation issue altogether.

    Hope this helps...

    My thought: C:\Program Files is for installation of 64-bit programs, C:\Program Files (x86) is for 32-bit programs. This 'scheme' goes back to when the first 64-bit version of Windows was XP Pro and continues in Win11 even though Win11 is not available as 32-bit. There's also the C:\ProgramData folder that I've found best to leave alone. The Portable programs I use go on my D: drive, only need I've found to write to the Registry is when creating shortcuts to the program.
